AppDynamics

AppDynamics is really good for comprehensive application monitoring and alerting, but does carry a learning curve to get the real value out of it.

VMTurbo Operations Manager seems better suited for medium to large environments with dozens of hosts and hundreds of VMs or more. It's most useful to users who want to spend less time micromanaging their environment. It is also useful for those who need powerful reporting tools that can generate reports covering all details.

Pros

  • AppDynamics provides an excellent overview of all the interactions between all of your various applications, providing a high-level view of the overall health of the whole application and any interactions or elements that are unhealthy can be seen from here.
  • AppDynamics focusses on Business Transactions, rather than overall application or server performance, meaning you can quickly see if one part of the system is not working as it should, meaning production issues are shown clearly as isolated problems (if they are) rather than overall application health problems.
  • AppDynamics provides excellent functionality with regards to tracing coding exceptions - errors can easily be drilled down to the method or line of code that is problematic.
  • AppDynamics is hugely flexible allowing very fine grained configuration and customisation.

  • The market based model for resource utilization drastically improves the workload balancing amongst our hosts. Trusting VMTurbo to just do things correctly took us some time, but in the end we have much more balanced resources usage.
  • The recommendations provided by the tool for right-sizing VMs are excellent. I used VMware vCenter Operations previously and it did not provide clear action items, instead relying on your ability to determine the best course of action. Our environment does not allow us to act immediately upon these recommendations or automate them, but we log the information to make recommendations during the next maintenance window.
  • The modelling and planning tools allow us to understand what hardware and licensing needs we will require as we scale our environment for predicted growth. The ability to use reference VMs for this scaling makes the forecast more accurate.

Cons

  • The initial set up for some parts of the features could be better documented.

  • Policy assignment is flexible but in some instances counter-intuitive. Knowing the best way to enact a change requires some thought.
  • Storage DRS requires more in-depth product knowledge. It does not recognize storage clusters by default and without this knowledge you may be letting VMTurbo make very bad recommendations.

This product has been a great addition to our tools. Moving forward, I can only see us purchasing additional licenses in order to expand the features we are able to use. In my opinion, the more end-to-end monitoring we have from the users to the backend infrastructure, the better we can ensure the environment is stable and will perform to the level that the business expects

Getting started is easy and quick. When you start getting past the basics it becomes less intuitive as to what you need to do to make the system work for you better.

All issues I've had they have been able to resolve quickly. They are very responsive and don't waste your time with basic troubleshooting steps (reboot the device, turn it off/on....)

Alternatives Considered

After looking at a number of different alternatives to AppDynamics its error reporting seems to be the greatest out of the lot. It tracks anything imaginable and allows for the reporting as much as you want with as much information as you want.

We looked at the old vCOPS suite from VMware. Turbonomic, at the time, had a lot more capability and functionality so we went with it. This was two years ago so I am unsure how the two products stack up now.

Return on Investment

  • Ensures that less buggy code is put into production
  • Quickly finds issues

  • We are saving CapEx cost of hardware investments. We have 29 Blade Servers and they are going to be consolidated into only 9 Blades.
  • We are saving OpEx cost of management of our system administrators; we have information in realtime and automate activities to have healthy applications.
  • We detected a lot of wasted space in storage in vhd, vmdx orphans files.
