It is best suited for larger companies with lots of remote workers that need complex access management. We've barely scratched the surface on what Appgate can do via its API.

F5
In the current digital world we are moving into, I would recommend F5 for all SMB to enterprise organizations. There are various models to pick from. This helps secure the environment and make the network robust to any sort of attacks. I am not able to think of any reason why one should not deploy or this device is less appropriate because nowadays every small company has application / ERPs. It is also worthwhile to note in case if all your apps are being deployed in the cloud by another service provider who provides you SAAS access, in that case, you can be at ease as securing these app falls on to the provider. However, should the budget be available I would recommend deploy this and enhancing your security.

Cons
Appgate
  • Live logging in the client. Currently you have to "download" the logs into a zip file and then open that zipfile to look at the logs. There's no logfile to tail or watch.
  • Load balancing between controllers could be better. Currently relies on round robin DNS and sometimes a browser will pick a different IP than previous and you'll get a big "LOST CONNECTION TO CONTROLLER" message.

  • UI/UX can be quick and modern.
  • The application hosting is not one-click.
  • You cannot observer the changes done for external users internally.

The company has been supportive overall of our needs and desired features. I have not personally called the support services, but I've heard no direct complaints either.

The existing system was FortiGate. The management of the system was a hassle. Because IT personnel had to manually create VPN accounts, user passwords were known to who created them and the end user did not have a way to change them. This created a security issue in the event an IT engineer left the company.

F5 BIG-IP Access Policy Manager (APM) is good compared to other solutions listed above due to various reasons and the foremost among them would be vendor popularity. From an administration perspective, it helps when you have products from same vendor performing well and F5 BIG-IP Access Policy Manager (APM) along with LTM and ASM checks that tick-box. The skill-set requirements are also taken care of as we do not have to hire an additional resource to manage other Access Control Solution separately.
