The possibilities are endless once you start looking at individual processes. You really start to question why you have previously implemented solution specific systems when workflows and apps can do the same job without the added expense. You are really only limited by your organisation's ability to develop apps and flows. We have a high contractor population in technology so building an in-house capability is somewhat restricted.

The tool has potential. Its capabilities and visual aspects could be considered rather basic but this might improve, particularly if the business intelligence/analytics aspect is leveraged. Once running well, it could allow (perhaps smaller) companies to successfully improve their customers' experiences through digitalizing customer journey - and we all know that customer loyalty goes a long way. However, whether or not the tool is comprehensive enough to deliver this for larger companies with more complex, multi- and omni-channel interactions is yet to be seen...

Pros

  • Allows the use of BPMN to describe and implement a business process.
  • Forms can be build relatively easily and with 17.2 (which we haven't upgraded to yet - I have a copy for development) will allow for a lot of flexibility in the layout too.
  • The ability to build Java plugins where needed is a huge benefit as there are very few solutions that can't be implemented using Appian.
  • Can port to multiple platforms relatively easily.
  • Database access is abstracted away, so trivial to move from one DB engine to another.

  • User-friendly UI
  • Relatively painless implementation

Cons

  • No source control.
  • Very minimal debugging.
  • Appian boasts it is "low code", but it is anything but, especially if you want to do anything non trivial.
  • Very hard to install and upgrade. This should be easy, but very hard to get right, very easy to mess up.
  • Doesn't scale easily, this again is a lot of hard work to get right and hard to maintain.

  • Standard edition is significantly lighter touch than the (pricier) Enterprise version
  • There are similar solutions on the market that are competitively prices and offer positive user experience
  • Data migration can be tricky at times

Overall I would say Appian is pretty easy to use. The learning curve for building forms and simple processes is short. However, a significant benefit of Appian is its use of business logic. In this case the user will need a deep understanding of logic statements (If, Or, And, etc). Also, to better use the data then a designer should have a good understanding of setting relationships between data points, building DB views and SQL queries. To realize the full power of Appian it does take someone with some development experience a good 6-12 months to be a well-rounded developer/designer. Also, it will help if the person doing the designing has some information architecture, interaction design experience. Knowledge on how organize data, layout forms, establish design patterns, will make the use of the forms easier.

In general, the Support team respond quickly and are knowledgeable and helpful. Account Management has been good and we have recently had an onsite visit from an Appian Architect and Account Manager to discuss Appian in the Cloud. Follow up from this meeting has been good with further information and pricing information received on a timely basis.

As analyst I participated in a developer boot camp. At times it was hard to keep up but most of the time it made sense. Trainer took the time to explain and slowed pace down to answer questions etc.

  • As our customers vary in size and maturity, the ROI ranges accordingly.
  • For younger, smaller businesses this is a useful tool. Digitalization of he customer journey has certainly helped save time and efforts in many cases.
  • For more mature market players the tool is not always comprehensive enough. Dashboard and report personalization take time and efforts, and sometimes it feels that a dedicated BI tool would be a more suitable solution.
