Appian

We chose a complex process to prototype, which included needing to use service request management, send notifications, generate a PDF of the information captured in the online form and package it up along with the myriad of documents that the business customer needed to send through as part of their application to get their licenses for the cafe. Appian handled this very well (though the document management we implemented was a bit clunky - this was more due to the short timeframe and could easily be improved with a bit of tweaking). We focused on the customer at the centre of the process, rather than the receiving agency/local government of the application, and saw huge savings in customer effort (in the vicinity of 80% time saving!) and visibility for both the customer and the receiving agency/local government on where their application is at. The use of business rules to guide the customer through the process also resulted in better quality information and completeness of the application, which in turn would reduce effort and time for the receiving agency/local government when processing the applications. We were able to use Appian to provide two low touch options for the receiving agency/local government - one which included an email template (using an Excel template) for them to update the status of the application and request further information (which then updated the system and sent notification back to the business customer); and another which enabled them to log into the prototype and process the work from a work list. Appian made these both easy and stuff just worked.

Their learning system is unmatched - it really has most of the features we required in our environment which is heavily instructor led as well as online. If they can get their support lined out to provide timely support they will be the leader in this area and I would be able to give them a 10.

Pros

  • Appian allows us to link systems together with data being automatically obtained from different areas of different databases. This has removed the requirement for the user to go to a screen and manually input data which then needs to be re-checked by a Supervisor.
  • Appian enables us to react quickly to an ever changing regulatory environment.
  • The re-useable components within Appian enable us to build and deploy new, straightforward, processes quickly.

  • Cornerstone Learning is very powerful and flexible. I have now administered 2 other Learning Management Systems for my organization and Cornerstone is by far the easiest to manage. I haven't run into a learning challenge that I couldn't solve with the Cornerstone Learning system and this system is more intuitive and easy to administer than previous systems. I found myself doing a lot of the work for others in previous systems, however, this system has the capability to easily distribute permissions and roles to Learning Partners throughout the organization to free my time up for more development and testing of new functions for the training organization.
  • Cornerstone Reporting is very easy to use and provides the ability for me to create reporting and share out to various Managers and Departments within the organization and has the flexibility to constrain permissions, so that only various areas see what they need to see. This has been a huge time saver in our organization.
  • Cornerstone has excellent online and inline help which is great when training additional administrators throughout the system. I believe that Cornerstone sets the standard in this area and is truly a Learning organization. You can click Help from any page you are on in Cornerstone and helpful how to videos and documentation immediately pops up to explain how to use that function. It is truly an invaluable resource.

Cons

  • Limitation of objects capability such as 'Date / Calendar' object.
  • Limitation on the number of pages to be displayed. Here, total / max. number is 5 main pages / tabs.
  • Limitation on displaying / positioning of sub-tabs below each main page / tab. it is only possible to display the sub-tabs below the main page / main top level tab, and if the number of tabs are increased, the UI / sub-tab display becomes busy / cluttered with the title.

  • I don't really have any complaints with this system. I always would like customer support to be more responsive and better, but this is likely due to my personal standard. Cornerstone does have better customer support than I have been used to with previous vendors.
  • Cornerstone is currently transitioning from their legacy to mobile platform and we have recently implemented, so we are having to wait on new build out and design for these mobile enhancements. Of course, as a client, I would like this tomorrow, but have been very pleased with the design and work.
  • We are integrated with the Workday HRIS and the integration between Workday and Cornerstone is a standard integration. It would be nice if this integration was more flexible, however, we did buy Cornerstone Web Services which allows us to create our own API integrations between the two systems to get data that may not have been included in the standard integration.

We recently renewed our license with Appian. We are convinced that its flexibility, relative ease of use, the support they provide, there mobile advancements and their general willingness and desire to see us succeed all contributed to our reason to renew our agreement with Appian

Cornerstone OnDemand in general has very good usability. It is easy for end users to start using it. We don`t need to provide any trainings for learners or line managers. At maximum we can create one pager with general information. It is easy to search trainings. You don’t need to know the ID or full name of training.

It’s surprisingly slow for a SAAS product. When you click on links, there’s no hourglass or waiting indicator, so it’s difficult to tell if the system is going to respond.

Would like a more personal support mechanism (i.e. if a ticket has gone back and forth, say 3 times, and still not resolved, people should get on the phone).

They are doing a great job of creating new features and fixing anything that is broken. However, sometimes you have to wait until the next quarterly update to get something fixed. I also feel like their Global Product Support team could be better. Perhaps hiring additional people would help.

Dig deep on what your current processes are and how they match up to Cornerstone OnDemand functionality. It's not that the Cornerstone OnDemand is bad, it just the amount of work it requires you to do to get your current data to fit into their system.

Alternatives Considered

Against programming languages like .NET and Java, Appian is faster to design and develop applications, but it lacks the flexibility in UI and advanced debugging tools. Against Pega, Appian is easier to use and less expensive.

Considering all five Learning Management Systems that I have been the admin for, Cornerstone OnDemand is my favorite; especially for corporate organizations. I believe they offer a complete package. I always keep my eye on new solutions and some are doing some interesting things, however, I will stick with Cornerstone OnDemand for the foreseeable future.

Return on Investment

  • With thoughtful planning, engineering and Appian development, we improved efficiency in one of the processes by 75% with a 100% internal and external adoption rate.
  • It placed the business ahead of the "cloud" game by being one of the first adopters of cloud technology

  • Cornerstone has already helped us deliver training from two major projects to our user base. In order to remain in compliance and avoid SOX violations, we used Cornerstone to distribute mandatory training to our users as well. The reporting capability is powerful and easy to use and allowed us to easily track our users' progress.
  • Cornerstone is not cheap. However, the travel costs the training team will save from moving from instructor-led training to eLearning modules are projected to be huge.
  • Users are becoming more apt to take eLearning modules. The median age at my company is 47, so we have had some resistance to change from instructor-led training to eLearning. However, they now understand that they have resources available to them 24/7, which has been a huge win to them.
