Appian

You name a process that needs to be repeatable and requires interaction between multiple people or groups Appian should be considered. I have not found a situation that Appian could not perform. Are there better applications in some instances? Sure, but Appian can integrate with those applications and provide data and reporting of those applications.

Promapp

Good for investigating the diverse ways your workers can share and collaborate with the material in your Promapp library. Promapp functions admirably with SharePoint. Promapp is a cloud-based device and stores your procedures remotely. You should consider having a reinforcement of material on the off chance that there is ever a blackout, though. I can state amazingly that this is very uncommon and they've moved to AWS for cloud-unwavering quality, yet a few chiefs inside your association may demand a reinforcement "blustery day" plan being set up to get to vital material.

Pros

  • Allows the use of BPMN to describe and implement a business process.
  • Forms can be build relatively easily and with 17.2 (which we haven't upgraded to yet - I have a copy for development) will allow for a lot of flexibility in the layout too.
  • The ability to build Java plugins where needed is a huge benefit as there are very few solutions that can't be implemented using Appian.
  • Can port to multiple platforms relatively easily.
  • Database access is abstracted away, so trivial to move from one DB engine to another.

  • Great for searching for processes
  • Good capability for collating feedback on processes for continuous improvement

Cons

  • Training. While configuration is accessible, being really effective requires either a lot of hands on trial and error and/or the supervision and guidance of an experienced user. Appian training is a forced march overview and not at all effective in getting a user up to speed.
  • Documentation. The online documentation, in the end, seems to be get lucky in finding what you are looking for or asking for help and waiting for an answer that may or may not be responsive. What may work well for their professional service people becomes problematic if you don't have a good understanding of the product in the first place.
  • Sales. it's an impressive product and that makes it easy for anxious salespeople to oversell capabilities to executives who may not be in a position to be critical about promises and implications. This can lead to unfulfilled expectations that limit additional applications.

  • Some of the linkages in the Risk Module reporting between mitigants and the key risks could be more comprehensive.

I think anyone should be able to use the product. It doesn't take a programmer to use it even though I am a programmer and it did help me to understand things quickly, it isn't a requirement and most people who are able to understand basic workflow concepts can pick up the product easily.

Chat built into the product. Support team is willing to take end user questions also, which lowers the burden to support. There is also great training and help built into the product. There is also a customer success team that touches base semi-regularly.

As analyst I participated in a developer boot camp. At times it was hard to keep up but most of the time it made sense. Trainer took the time to explain and slowed pace down to answer questions etc.

Alternatives Considered

Against programming languages like .NET and Java, Appian is faster to design and develop applications, but it lacks the flexibility in UI and advanced debugging tools. Against Pega, Appian is easier to use and less expensive.

Promapp was selected by the business, primarily for its ease of use. While for technical BPMN modeling and simulation iGrafx was great, it is not approachable and at the time the license model was not conducive to enterprise rollout. Blueworks Live was a middle ground, but we went with the end user preference.

Return on Investment

  • Appian has reduced average call handling times in every company we have implemented it in
  • Appian has allowed us to create a consistent experience for our customers and simplified our internal processes saving time and money
  • Appian enables heavy re-use through out allowing us to cut development costs

  • Promapp is a core component of our business management system and has been used extensively in our ERP evaluation and implementation project
  • The Risk Management features allowed integration with the process management activities and removed the need to acquire a separate risk management tool.
  • The tool is well accepted in the organisation and is the goto reference point for business processes.
