Appian

Appian is very well suited for complex business processes. If implementing using traditional methods is daunting, then Appian would be a good alternative. It follows that simpler business processes would be a breeze. Also, it's well suited for situations where sharing data across processes/applications is likely. There's no need to "integrate" from Appian app to Appian app, so sharing data within the platform is trivial from a technical implementation perspective. Appian may not be as well suited for dealing with very large datasets (tens of thousands of records), it seems too much data may start taxing the system.

Salesforce App Cloud

Salesforce App Cloud is well suited to be able to help with the integration of other apps so that I can easily reach out to individuals that my organization is trying to go after. I like that the data from other apps works seamlessly with Salesforce and is easy so that I'm not having to enter the information by myself

Pros

  • Appian allows us to link systems together with data being automatically obtained from different areas of different databases. This has removed the requirement for the user to go to a screen and manually input data which then needs to be re-checked by a Supervisor.
  • Appian enables us to react quickly to an ever changing regulatory environment.
  • The re-useable components within Appian enable us to build and deploy new, straightforward, processes quickly.

  • Keeping track of information regarding to contacts, organization and process while building sales pipeline at our organization.
  • The pardot tool is very helpful to show who's read and opened emails as well as various links in emails.
  • Being able to see account history over the years to see how we progress in different companies.

Cons

  • Appian is in the middle of our IT architecture. But Appian does not have enough capacity for connection and it's too hard to develop some web services.
  • Appian must be easier to use like an exchange bus.
  • The user experience is poor. Appian UI is not flexible enough. We can not customize the different screens correctly.

As analyst I participated in a developer boot camp. At times it was hard to keep up but most of the time it made sense. Trainer took the time to explain and slowed pace down to answer questions etc.

Alternatives Considered

In additional to Appian, we evaluated SalesForces and K2. Both either did not handle the use case complexity we needed to address or had issues with deployment/maintenance/regression test issues.

The most obvious alternative would have been to create a software using Visual Studio, with all the costs and compatibility issues that could have arisen throughout the process. Of course there are many others IDEs that could have been used, but in the end of the day it would always be necessary to hire a software company to build a solution, which would have significative costs and risks.

Return on Investment

  • Appian is an accelerator for us. We don't need to build in the business process management in house.

  • It allowed our firm to automatize a business process that involved three departments (Sales, Design Team and Engineer). Before using the app, Sales people used to send proposal requests to Design team without passing through a validation system with the Engineers. Using the platform, an app was build, with all the fields necessary for Design team to have enough info to build a proposal. A validation field that can only be checked by Engineers was created in order to avoid Sales people to ask for proposal to Design team without prior authorization from Engineers. This decreased the "time to proposal" in several weeks and avoided lots of emails back an forth, with the risk of loss of informations.
