Likelihood to Recommend

Appian

Surely Appian is not a Site Development Tool. So we should avoid the use of a system for just UX development. We should look for process automation as much as we can mature the use cases.

ServiceNow

ServiceNow is well suited as a ticketing tool for both large enterprises where major ticketing tool needs to have integrations with multiple third-party apps and the medium scale companies as well, where management doesn't want to spend too much cost and manpower in creating and maintaining a ticketing system. ServiceNow also provides lots of features which helps to reduce the cost of different tools required for individual tasks.

Pros

Appian

  • Easy to modify the appreance of a form: you can do it with users.
  • Flexibility: you can really create a lot of different apps for different topics.
  • The speed in development in order to have the first functional mock-up as soon as possible.

ServiceNow

Cons

Appian

  • We had such a short timeframe for implementing the prototype that we did not get an opportunity to explore the drag and drop business process modelling functionality - this is available in the Appian product, and would enable low code development, but I can't really comment on how good it is.

  • Sometimes too much, is just that; too much. SN offers so much, that you can kind of get lost in all its features.
  • Color customizing would be nice for those with visual impairments.
  • Cost is steep, but you do get a lot.

Overall, Appian as a development platform is good and bad.On the down side, it has basically no source control as of 19.1 (though they argue it does), has very limited debugging built in, the language to create your UI is one of the weirdest you will come across (but once you get your head around it, it works - and they have improved the drag and drop UI builder, but you will pretty much always need to update the code it generates at some point). The BPMN is not standard, but easy to understand. On the plus side, buildings processes is easy and fun. Once you understand it, building the forms you will need is very easy too. Building your business rules uses the same language as the UI, so that isn't too hard either. You can put an application together reasonable quickly, including accessing other systems via RESTful services and so on

There are lots of materials online. However, it would be easier for users to have specific training and/or specific videos based on the projects they are working on.However, we are having 3rd party vendor (Bits in Glass Inc.) to provide us with support in Appian development. We are also going through various Appian training videos available online such as YouTube.

To type in what should be a text box, you have to click an empty cell, a tiny text box pop up opens with a check box and an X. You the. Type in the text box and have to click the check mark. If you have a bunch of fields to fill out, doing this is very annoying. Absolutely know thought went in to this. I'm sure somebody in marketing thought it was a good idea. It wasn't.

Without exception, every client I have worked with has been very happy with their resulting product. While this is partly due to my work, I must point out that the platform is the winning decision, not the implementer.

Alternatives Considered

Appian

When evaluating Appian we were asked to compare it to other enterprise tools we currently use such as Atlassian's JIRA and Rally. It is really impossible to compare the two for the simple fact that within Appian you can build the workflows and data capture mechanisms that each of these tools offer. The difference is that with Appian you can customize the workflows to an infinite degree whereas with an off the shelf application you are relatively limited to what the developer provides.

Return on Investment

Appian

  • So far, my team has used Appian to replace a legacy system with the idea of improving the process. The ROI expected from this process should come in the form of increased productivity and faster turnaround. By integrating Appian, my team also expects a reduction in errors, and increased follow-upfront our customers that would otherwise have been missed.

  • The customization available in ServiceNow has helped us manage our ticketload in a timely manner.
  • As we add modules to ServiceNow, it continues to be a force multiplier for our operations team.
