Likelihood to Recommend

Appian

Depending on the area you want to implement, and the size of your business, Appian might be a perfect fit or a very bad decision. If you are a medium to large business with a lot of manual processes and work flows, then I would highly recommend Appian. For a lot of business needs there are a lot of very good open source solutions that would do a much better job. Ruby on Rails (RoR) is one example that comes to mind (but there are many many others such as NodeJS, ASP.net etc.). RoR creates applications quickly, has full source control, is easy to install and maintain, has a lot of 3rd party plugins to build your application quickly, integrates with technologies to allow scaling, multiple environments (dev, UAT, Prod etc) and has a huge web support presence. So basically pick the right tool for the job.

Skuid

Skuid for Salesforce is great, but I have not used it on any other applications. Overlaying detail pages and creating brand new custom tabs overlayed with a Skuid page allows you to address numerous business initiatives and increases the efficiency and effectiveness of our sales teams.

Cons

Appian

  • Appian is in the middle of our IT architecture. But Appian does not have enough capacity for connection and it's too hard to develop some web services.
  • Appian must be easier to use like an exchange bus.
  • The user experience is poor. Appian UI is not flexible enough. We can not customize the different screens correctly.

Skuid

  • Load time
  • Record history is difficult to follow
  • Themes should be more flexible

Usability

Overall I would say Appian is pretty easy to use. The learning curve for building forms and simple processes is short. However, a significant benefit of Appian is its use of business logic. In this case the user will need a deep understanding of logic statements (If, Or, And, etc). Also, to better use the data then a designer should have a good understanding of setting relationships between data points, building DB views and SQL queries. To realize the full power of Appian it does take someone with some development experience a good 6-12 months to be a well-rounded developer/designer. Also, it will help if the person doing the designing has some information architecture, interaction design experience. Knowledge on how organize data, layout forms, establish design patterns, will make the use of the forms easier.

Support for Appian is fairly good. However I have found sometimes that the on-premise support can be a little lacking as this is not Appian's strategic route.

It was really seamless. SaaS in the true definition of the word. We logged on and started using the product. Very easy.

Alternatives Considered

Appian

In additional to Appian, we evaluated SalesForces and K2. Both either did not handle the use case complexity we needed to address or had issues with deployment/maintenance/regression test issues.

Skuid

Salesforce Flows was another way of accomplishing some goals we had but Skuid was much simpler to set up, more intuitive for users, and faster to run. We didn't experience any Apex exceptions or query limits. The only downside to using Skuid vs. Flows was that Skuid required developers whereas Flows can be done by an administrator.

Return on Investment

Appian

  • Appian is agood workflow tool and solves many problems, but for us the main challenge is to train people. So, there should be more support from Appian's side to make learning easy.
  • Appian study videos also should have more examples. I do not see any examples, they just talk about the theory. Now I am seeing some of the newer videos which are better.
  • Appian should work on training videos more, and should provide more support to the community.

Skuid

  • Skuid has an ROI report called "Total Economic Impact of Skuid" available on their website which does accurately represent the benefits it offers based on a study done by Forrester.
  • In order to maximize investment in Skuid it is best to use it across the business to build multiple applications.
  • Skuid is able to meet time to market and digital transformation demands as long as there is a commitment and investment in the tool by the business. An proper evaluation should be conducted to ensure it is a good fit.
