Appian

Surely Appian is not a Site Development Tool. So we should avoid the use of a system for just UX development. We should look for process automation as much as we can mature the use cases.

TIBCO ActiveMatrix BPM

The scenario where TIBCO ActiveMatrix is well suited is in the scenario where there are more long-term business processes and in a complex corporate organization where there are many users with different privileges to perform actions on the same processes. It's less appropriate where there are no complex business process especially if the resubmit of the task in error is not required.

Pros

  • I have observed after version 17.1 we have a lot of good features in Appian that improve usability (UX). This adds real value in this competitive Digital space.
  • You can understand business use case and convert it to a logical process automation.
  • Process Modeller has improved a lot and providing smart services use adds more value.
  • Service integration helps us to seamlessly integrate with third-party systems

  • Workspace and Openspace Console that offers a powerful method for troubleshooting and viewing the routing within a process
  • Easy representation of the corporate organization
  • Powerful IDE to design a business process as a TIBCO Business Studio BPM Edition
  • Testing and Debugging

Cons

  • Advanced functionality requires use of the Appian expression language. The more advanced the logic, the harder it is to build with the expression language. This means development expertise is more relevant if you need advanced functionality, which I imagine applies almost all the time. I would much prefer if they allowed some common language such as JavaScript or Groovy out of the box.
  • Debugging has proved difficult.

Great platform for providing business process management. Fairly easy to learn tool (especially now that I have seen the evolution over 5 years). More difficult to master, but there is a great community that is always willing and able to help solve your problem.

We have Appian support here full time who are always helpful and understand both the products and our needs. They help guide the product to help it stay stable. On the odd occasion we need to call Appian themselves, they have always been responsive and genuinely want to help us solve the issue.

As analyst I participated in a developer boot camp. At times it was hard to keep up but most of the time it made sense. Trainer took the time to explain and slowed pace down to answer questions etc.

Alternatives Considered

As a matter of fact, I was not part of the selection process when Appian was selected for SADIE project. Appian was selected because of its quick application development capability. I heard - someone from the 3rd party development company mentioned - that anything can be built between 4-6 months (of course, enough time and adequate resource availability are factors to consider).

I selected TIBCO ActiveMatrix BPM because for me it is a fantastic and powerful product that permits me to easily implement complex business processes and offers many tools for monitoring, troubleshooting, and administration. In this product there is all that is needed when you must model a complex business scenario and you must provide a simple mechanism for resubmitting

Return on Investment

  • Increased Visibility - Visibility into the amount and type of work across the organization has allowed senior management to make better and more informed decisions
  • Improved Efficiency - Reduced the number of different work intake processes by 85% which makes the intake, review and disposition of requests much faster
  • ROI - Better decisions, more efficient processing of work requests improves resource management and allocation ultimately reducing costs
  • Workload Reduction - Many of the organization's processes were still be managed via spreadsheets and email. This required talented personnel to spend more time shuffling papers than focusing on more meaningful and rewarding work.

  • Overall with the issues we are having with AMX BPM and managing the TIBCO platforms, it has undermined the cost benefits of the application.
  • On a positive note, using AMX BPM has enabled the organization to move from a paper based system to a digital solution
  • Since we using a suite of TIBCO products, the cost to acquire products has been less phenomenal compared to other products on the market.
