Appian

Surely Appian is not a Site Development Tool. So we should avoid the use of a system for just UX development. We should look for process automation as much as we can mature the use cases.

It definitely helps with data entry (especially when you receive data in .pdf, Excel or email, etc). When colleagues need to enter formatted data into their system, in the same way, every day, UiPath can help with data entry. It also helps with generating data/reports from the system. It can be set at a specific time of the month/day, etc. This will save a lot of time opening the application and generating reports manually.Just imagine the bot is the new colleague without any knowledge, you have to show the bot where to click, what to enter, etc.It is not very suitable for data analysis and business analytics. The bot will not know if you sell a piece of diamond for 1 USD etc.

Pros

  • I have observed after version 17.1 we have a lot of good features in Appian that improve usability (UX). This adds real value in this competitive Digital space.
  • You can understand business use case and convert it to a logical process automation.
  • Process Modeller has improved a lot and providing smart services use adds more value.
  • Service integration helps us to seamlessly integrate with third-party systems

  • Easy to implement, also with little coding experience.
  • Users always get excited when they see a robot doing their 'boring' tasks.
  • Tons and tons of options and features.

Cons

  • Appian is continually improving the product but having to learn new features every 3 months (upgrade schedule) can be a challenge.
  • Graphical user interface could use some additional improvements but it has come a long way already.
  • Sites could use some additional modifications. Currently, the News Feed is not available on a site.

  • Outlook '.oft' and '.msg' file importing - Almost impossible in UiPath even with coding. A module called "Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook" is not working properly with UiPath. It needs to be integrated in a better way.
  • Debugging Mode - Debugging mode is more like bugging mode. It is buggy most of the time and you cannot just go in and start at some point of the code.

We need more time in the real world to determine if it will be renewed. But it is definitely being used presently and is being evaluated

Usability

Great platform for providing business process management. Fairly easy to learn tool (especially now that I have seen the evolution over 5 years). More difficult to master, but there is a great community that is always willing and able to help solve your problem.

Support

Appian8.4

Appian support is pretty good. I would say in many cases it is great. There are some items that it takes too long to resolve. Support is available on our schedule because of the different locations around the globe. Having Appian host our system and perform all of the necessary upgrades, security and system patches has been fantastic. Not being 2 or 3 releases behind is great especially since Appian provides upgrades 4 times a year.

In-Person Training

As analyst I participated in a developer boot camp. At times it was hard to keep up but most of the time it made sense. Trainer took the time to explain and slowed pace down to answer questions etc.

Alternatives Considered

I have seen other products but I have not used them from a development stand point. From a user stand point we are using Service Now and I find the forms are not as rich and harder to follow. Service Now seems like an older system that does not have the ability that Appian has in many cases.

UiPath is one of the most known RPA platforms. The difference among others is that they spend a lot of money on research and improving in order to offer a beautiful solution. Other than that, as I haven’t really used anything else, I can’t provide other solid information or comparisons.

Return on Investment

  • Reduced headcount by removing manual processing and cross checking.
  • Reduced errors by automatically inputting data rather than manually keying.
  • Simplified training as processes are now standardised and far easier to use than previously.

  • Drive innovation
  • Better process discipline
  • Another tool to improve processes
