AppRiver

I think AppRiver is suited for a small business looking for some basics for securing their email flow. Simple easy to use tools and the web GUI is great. The as-a-service feature is great as a small business doesn't have to set up or maintain scanning hardware or software on-premise. They also have a feature that caches emails if unable to be delivered, unfortunately, unlike other vendors they do not have an emergency inbox available online at this time. I think larger businesses that need to ensure delivery of emails with DKIM and DMARC are going to find that this service is lacking and not able to handle some of the new norms of email security.

Larger corporations that require identity-based encryption would benefit from the product. Smaller corporations that want a more feature-rich product with a better user experience would not benefit as much

Pros

AppRiver

  • Ease of management for a MSP. Even though there is no integration w/ PSA tools currently, I don't see this as a negative. The management is multi-tenant and simple to navigate.
  • Support via chat is fast and very competent. Only downside is they are just available during extended business hours, not 24x7 on the chat.
  • Reselling Office 365 is very simple and gives us an advantage over our competitors. Includes pre sales support and post sale support.
  • Encrypted email services act much like others, it works very well and includes and Outlook Plug in to make it obvious you intend to send messaged encrypted.
  • Email continuity. Email queuing is included, so if your onsite server goes down, mail queues at the spam filter until service is restored. You can step it up w/ their email continuity service which give you access to your mail at the spam filter in cases where your mail server is down for an extended period of time.

  • Cloud-based portal making it easier to implement for smaller businesses
  • Plug ins for Outlook and Office 365 email apps to make one-button encryption easier for users to activate. For Office apps like Word et al you have a special menu that you can add users to your senders and specify access rights to encrypt your messages from within these apps.
  • An add-on utility to encrypt any sized files is part of the package. Many of its competitors have limits on email attachment size, this is a way around these limits.
  • The product does support integration with a third-party tool from Digital Guardian (https://digitalguardian.com/) for DLP features.

Cons

AppRiver

  • No complaints currently.

Voltage SecureMail

  • Its web-portal is pretty bare bones, unlike some competitors that are more feature-rich
  • Its documentation is also voluminous, making it hard to find something since it is spread across multiple manuals for particular features.
  • It doesn't support IMAP connections, unlike some of its competitors.

Support

I would say they have great support for simple things, but once you have to dig deeper into issues that may be caused by things that are on their end the support gets thin and can be frustrating as they don't seem to have a second tier of support. They don't have any info on DMARC or DKIM or when they will possibly be implementing it. Help with email delivery is super sparse unless you have their hosted exchange service. But when they are smart hosting they do not have much to add to why your email may not be getting where it was intended

Alternatives Considered

AppRiver

We evaluated Rackspace but found their partner program to be less attractive. Clunky and smaller margins.

Voltage SecureMail

I think SecureMail is showing its age -- it is based on the Voltage product that HPE purchased a few years ago and hasn't really been updated since then substantially. Its documentation and web portal aren't as useful as some of the other products, and Zix has better DLP integration that is part of the base product, rather than an add-on

Return on Investment

AppRiver

  • AppRiver has reduced the time we spend on addressing spam and email borne viruses by at least 95%. Back in the early/mid 2000's, we spent hours a week dealing w/ spam, now its a few minutes a month, mostly approving whitelist requests and helping clients w/ misunderstandings about why something was blocked by the spam filter.
  • We make decent margins on Office 365 and the provisioning time has been easily cut by two thirds for new clients.
  • Probably the largest impact is the lack of time we spend managing the solution. When managing your own spam filter, it needs care and feeding. With AppRiver, once you get someone signed up, you don't have to manage the tool.
