AppSense

AppSense is great for Citrix environments but can be troublesome for fat client users who are road warriors.

Ivanti Workspace Control (powered by RES)

We run a large enterprise Citrix environment and we use Ivanti Workspace Control (IWC) to take over for GPOs and other systems to have just one place to go to change any setting we need to change. IWC is a one-stop shop for everything OS and user based. Currently, we rely greatly on IWC to achieve mission-critical goals.

Pros

  • Capturing application settings per user.
  • Office policy settings.
  • Granular control of settings per application.
Mark Borenstein profile photo
  • Manage user policies with a nice GUI and also place policies on application level instead of global to decrease log in times.
  • Set up test scenarios easier because of the easy to use access control, or even better turn off parts of Workspace Control for a test user, using Workspace Containers.
  • The security module makes sure users cannot use Cryptolocker viruses because of the managed applications option

Cons

  • Better control at the pre-network login stages.
Mark Borenstein profile photo
  • Some aspects of file security could be improved upon.
  • Learning curve could be reduced.
  • There could be a bit more documentation and guides around. sometimes we want to get something done but could use a little more granilarity on how to do it.

The tool is integral to how business is done by end users, thus it's imperative to keep the solution around. Not to mention the business leverages the experience to assist clients with building out the solution for their needs.

It was relatively easy to configure.

The vast majority of features are very easily deployed, managed, maintained or adjusted with minimal effort. Some portions of the suite require some advanced experience to "massage" just right to be smooth and accessible for users or lower level administrators such as the integration of other tools in the environment or scaling the solution to meet the demands or complexity of very large enterprise environments.

Fast, knowledgeable resources that are courteous and want to help solve your problem the right way. Often offering some training so that you can better understand something that you're not as familiar with or that may not directly be an issue with the product!

Test, test, test.

The implementation is typcially pretty simple on a flat active directly and non-DMZ based environment. Once things become more complex it is imperative to move slowly and test frequently with UAT groups and engineers.

Alternatives Considered

The decision to use AppSense was not mine. If I had to choose a product today, I would at least want to evaluate the alternative from RES Software - from what I have read/heard it sounds like the better choice as far as reliability, support, and lack of bugs. I have not personally used it yet though.

Appsense now Endpoint Management is a great tool, eventually IWC will fade and Endpoint will absorb all its useful features. Once the transition to appsense is complete we will be shifting to it rather than IWC but in the mean time IWC is our tool of choice.
