If you are trying to understand your IT costs and have cost pools and services defined then you are in a good position to move forward. If you are missing one of those items, spend the time getting that figured out before trying to implement the system. You can do that in parallel and use the ATUM model but it will not be an quick implementation. Ask what services Apptio can help with during the implementation process. They have some very good resources that can help provide best practice details from other customers.

BMC Remedy

BMC works for change management functions but what we found was that the application was extremely limited once you make customizations/changes. Standard updates/patches become difficult to execute and then the software gets out of sync with the current version. The ITSM functions were limited and we found other products were far superior in this area.

Pros

  • Service Costing – if you have to buy any module, this would be it! Comprehensive bottom up services cost analysis and reporting.
  • Bill of IT – Great module if you do charge backs. Can also help with Show Back of costs to the business.
  • Vendor Management – Manage SLAs and align those with vendor performance. While there are other products in the market that provide better functionality, this would be for a novice in this space.

  • Data-Driven Configuration for quick setup of Categories, Support Departments, Locations, Assignment, Templates & more.
  • Depth of Functionality across the ITSM Modules to reduce customization for mature IT organizations
  • Customization - BMC Remedy AR System is an on-premise Rapid Application Development platform
  • Inexpensive New Customer Licensing - When BMC changed pricing for BMC Remedy ITSM (in the blue model shift back in 2008), they became the least expensive ERP4IT style suite.
  • Scalability - There are multiple customers running with 1000s of concurrent users on BMC Remedy. The largest commercial deployment has 8,000+ concurrent users.
  • Upgrades - Even though BMC Remedy has a horrible reputation, they have changed their architecture in BMC Remedy ITSM 7.6.4 to add "overlays" which is something that none of their competitors have. This allows customized workflows to be seamlessly migrated, albeit with additional configuration required. Still, it should be applauded as an advance.

Cons

  • Service Costing – Clean up the inference engine. The inference engine helps automatically map relationships between data. It is however, prone to error.
  • Application performance – Apptio was plagued by terrible application performance and response. They ned to work on this aggressively if they aspire to be the market leader.
  • Application Lifecycle – This is an area that changes constantly and the company needs to really address it. A normal DEV to STAGE to PROD would suffice. Not the current mix of backwards and forwards environment copies which are tedious and confusing.

  • Consistency across all the different applications.
  • What is one of the greatest benefits of the BMC solution, can also be a detriment - the ability to perform any customization. You are able to customize the product to make it virtually unusable.

At least Remedy is all contained in a single platform, so the interface is consistent. Also, the most heavily performed functions are generally usable. However, to use some of the more advanced modules can be a bit more cumbersome (such as Change Management and CMDB (Not Including ADDM)). So, overall BMC Remedy ITSM is better than some applications like CA SDM or HP SM, but not quite on par with ServiceNow.

Their tech support is top notch. They respond and get back to us, even on lower level incidents and issues, very quickly. It is rare that we deal with a support technician who does not know what they are doing.

Well, so far. Apptio Consulting covered specific model architecting areas particularly. Most of the heavy lifting is being done in-house with support from Apptio as it relates to tool impacts and needs. Some administrative tasks were redundant

Alternatives Considered

There is no true competitor that is even comparable to allowing the same capabilities and benefits Apptio provides. It is ground breaking in every sense of the word and will make a huge difference for each and every customer. It can be very complex at times, but like everything in life anything worth implementing takes time, effort, and some growing pains.

The decision to select BMC Remedy was made prior to my employment. We did conduct an RFC process for a new ITSM platform and BMC was considered but not selected. We looked at several platforms and ended up choosing Ivanti Service Desk (previously LANDESK) due to the features, ease of customization and price.
