Apricot by Social Solutions

There's always room for improvement. Also, with the HUD APR and ESG CAPER report, since these are required reports for funded agencies, and Apricot is a comparable database, agencies using Apricot should not be required to pay for the feature/updates of these.

Bloomerang

When I first started, we did not engage one-on-one with our donors very often, if ever. With DonorPerfect, it was very difficult to develop a portfolio and move into a more major gifts-focused program. Bloomerang has allowed us to develop a portfolio and begin engaging with our donors on a more meaningful level. This wouldn't have been possible without it.

Pros

  • We have found Apricot effective for designing data entry screen for our local grantee organizations to track clients in our programs. The ability to establish field and other edits has resulted in quality control for entered data. The capability to tweak screens through form logic for skips and consistency checks has made it easy to customize.
  • We provide our grantees with access to only the clients in their program and the user/group/programs profiles have helped us to efficiently manage this process and provide custom access profiles as needed.
  • The reporting capabilities have allowed us to design a long list of client listings and performance reports including plan versus actual reports. Grantees have found these reports useful for their local management of programs.
  • For programs where we need a copy of the signed participant applications it is great that grantees can upload a scan and attach to each participant's profile.

  • Website integration for online donations is awesome! It makes it so much easier to raise money online. We've tripled the amount of money we raise online, mainly because of this and the ability to send emails through the system.
  • Emails are tracked directly in a donor's record, so we can see instantly their engagement with our content.
  • Integration with DonorSearch is awesome and seems to be improving often.
  • They listen to their customers' needs. If enough customers request a feature, they'll get it for us. We feel like the development of this software is always happening and it's a partnership, rather than a transaction.

Cons

  • The email function is difficult and cumbersome.
Terri Willis, MPA profile photo
  • Some of the searches did not bring up the expected results. It would be good to see the logic be a little more "fuzzy".
  • More pre-set reports would be helpful for small organizations who do not understand the logic behind how to get the results they are seeking.
  • An ability to just page through donor records would be nice. Sometimes you just want to browse the data to get inspired.

I went to the Summit a few weeks ago to learn about the future expansion and vision of Social Solutions. I already been with Apricot for 5 years and researched other products I still come back to Apricot and where it can grow with us.

It is a terrific too, for small nonprofits. Once they have their database loaded it's easy to maintain

It is clearly the most usable of all products I have used or evaluated.
Here is an example. I created an online event registration form (the first form I ever created on Bloomerang), linked it to a new Stripe account for credit card processing, embedded it in my website, processed test transactions using "dummy" account numbers provided by Stripe, went "live, and made a registration with my credit card - IN ONLY 1 HOUR. And everything worked flawlessly including automatically entering my info in my existing Bloomerang constituent account and notifying me via email.
While I am not a rookie, I am not an IT person. This was EASY!!!!!

Take the time to learn apricot and all the functions before implementation. Know what the end results are before designing forms

Alternatives Considered

We have not used another product the way we use Apricot. I was not around when other products were demoed.

Raiser's Edge didn't do any of what I needed and their NXT version was crazy complicated and triple the price. DonorPerfect was a close 2nd place. Their event management was better, but we only run one event and Bloomerang was better on everything else. Bloomerang also had the integrated donor screening option. Salsa was by far the best on the social interaction and e-mail side, but the database side was not what I wanted. Neon was also interesting, but not for me and our situation. One application is not always the best for everyone - it needs to address your specific needs.

Return on Investment

  • We have only been using Apricot for a little less than a year. But we are convinced that when grant season comes around next year we will save lots of time and money with the ease of pulling reports.

  • Because my organization has been using Bloomerang for only one year, we haven't yet studied what impact it has had on our ROI. We have, however, noted that we are able to more efficiently and more rapidly communicate with constituents now than we were able to before we had Bloomerang. We can quickly and efficiently generate acknowledgements and tax receipts - and do so - better than we ever did before.
