APSIS Pro

Works well, relatively easy to use - but lacks some up-to-date and modern features as well as look and feel. The support provided is OK but not world class. It is too bad as APSIS as a company is quite good at inspiring and providing insights into trends in email marketing.

Kissmetrics

Kissmetric is well suited for people that feel that they are not seeing the right kind of data from Google Analytics. If you have ever looked a Google Analytics report and said "I wish I knew what the 10 people that read this case study did before, after and even a week from now on my website", then Kissmetrics is for you and will help you answer those questions.On the other hand--if you have no technical expertise or knowledge of viewing data, then Kissmetrics may prove a bit difficult for you to set up and manage.

Pros

  • We have a pre-designed template and pre-build elements and thus it is quite easy to compose nice looking newsletters.
  • Doing split-tests on subject, clicks etc. is quite easy and requires no tech help.
  • Imporing new contacts and adding to the list is straight forward.

  • The more events you track and properties you send along, the more you can see how specific users use your product/service. The user based timeline gives you a perfect start point to get in touch with users, because you can see where they get stuck.
  • Tracking your traffic sources and how they influence conversions is awesome. You can get a perfect view of how much a traffic source contributes to revenue.
  • Funnel reports give you more insights into micro and macro conversion steps and give you actionable data to work with.
  • Customer support!

Cons

  • The user interface is not good. Too much scrolling and too many menues to navigate. Half of the pages are updated to a "new" look with the rest still being the (really) old design. This badly needs a make-over.
  • There is no one-click "send reminder to those who did not open". To send reminders, it is nescessary to build a filter a do a new send using the filter. Such a simple and often repeated task should be automated.
  • It is not possible to add a "Why did you leave us?"-page for opt-outs... Really misses this.
  • The statistics are too limited and to difficult to use - mostly due to the UI design as described above.

  • Google Mobile Ads tracking (we're driving signups through mobile display ads to our app on Google play, and cannot identify traffic source in KM). Mobile search and desktop ads are tracked perfectly
  • Mail integration to send e-mails from KM to users

Our front-line product support person (Mika) is great. She is responsive and great to work with.

However, the data accuracy issue described earlier is the reason for the low score here. This issue was escalated from front-line to support to level 2 technical support and then it disappeared into a black hole. Escalations, in general, do not go well. We get no response for days, or I have to chase things down. This is not acceptable. Marketing metrics are critically important to me and I need answers quickly. I cannot afford to wait around for days / weeks for a response.

Just to be clear, these comments only apply to escalated support issues.

Again, we were fortunate to work with KISSmetrics as they built their application, but Hiten, their CEO and founder, was incredibly helpful to me personally, and to our metrics-driven business as a whole, as we adopted their tool.

I loved this aspect of the product. It wasn't just that the documentation and online tutorials are great - which they are - the on-boarding process though was really stellar. Once you have set everything up, you get a welcome message followed by a step-by-step guide to get you started that is built right into the product interface. For example, the UI asks you to first do X, and then copy this code snippet and send it to your developer who will know what to do with it. When you come back after the first interaction with the product, it continues the process by explaining right in the UI how to track events etc.This kind of step-by-step approach is incredibly efficient. Although there are various forms of supporting documentation (PDFs videos etc) to support every step, you don't really need them. This approach means that you are up and running very quickly with virtually no training time or documentation consultation. Highly efficient process.

Alternatives Considered

MailChimp offers more flexibilty but also seems a bit more complicated to use. We did not use it long enough to really get an idea of the positive and negative.

The Google Analytics Premium is a more complex tool, with possible integration to AdWords, Tag Manager etc.Kissmetrics offers a narrower set of IT features, that however fully suit most needs. Google Analytics for example limited the data exports to 10,000 lines per click - to download a large report with e.g. one million rows requires to implement a script that repeats thousand times a request t oretrieve data. These artifical limitations are not present by Kissmetrics and one is able to export the data to own big data analytical tools.

Return on Investment

  • We are still trying to figure out how to use this medium for sales. We have had some success with Black Monday sales, but in general we do not have much response to our emails.
  • We have increases our visibility with our customers by making sure to land in their mailbox regulary with nice looking messages.

  • KM has added a more detailed view into the user behavior on our website.
  • The tool has equipped our Marketing department with the ability to track individual users, this is very useful with KM's live tracking functionality.
  • The fact that Kissmetrics integrates with Marketo was very important to use - it brought increased value for both solutions.
