Changepoint

Changepoint is basic and would, therefore, work for businesses with uncomplicated requests, pretty straightforward workflows and willingness to work with an unsightly solution. It is basic, from the UI to the search option and the way the information is captured, which can be frustrating and counter-intuitive at times.It is relatively robust (i.e. I have been using it for almost 2 years and have not seen it crash once) but it does log me out when the system has been inactive for about 30 minutes - and I am only notified about being logged out upon clicking the Submit button, meaning many a line of text have been typed more than once!

Pros

  • Time tracking because you can account for almost every single minute of your day with detailed descriptions attached. The reporting of time came in very good use when clients questioned billing.
  • Robust billing portal that was pretty customizable.
  • Could track employee costs well once the correct numbers were placed into the system. Came in very handy for billing and company budgeting and projections.

  • Changepoint provides flexibility in terms of the workflow process, allowing a good degree of customization
  • The actions are time-stamped, and whilst Changepoint does not alert the users when things are about to expire, it does provide a timeline
  • It is flexible in regards to the type of information we look to capture on each request

Cons

  • The overall layout and physical design of the portals could be simplified greatly. The program is anything but intuitive to use.
  • I found myself clicking what felt like a 1,000 times just to complete one small task. Billing was very cumbersome and the program did not integrate smoothly with Quickbooks as was previously promised.
  • Saving and making templates for billing etc. was a tedious process that also cost extra!
  • The program is as good as what you put into it, but they designed the software for a more particular one-sided way to work and manage, so it made customizing a project to your companies methods tricky.
  • Overall a very cumbersome program that looks as if it was designed at the start of the millennium and note 16 years into it.

  • Changepoint can be rather buggy and 'clunky'
  • If the system is idle, it logs out the users far too quickly, resulting in wasted time as well as duplication of efforts
  • It is not the most intuitive or user-friendly solution

Our users are now used to the idiosyncrasies of Changepoint and we have significant data accumulated in the system. I do not imagine that we will have a strong enough need in the near future to disrupt the business to the extent that it would be worth it to move to a new system. We are also about to upgrade to V2012, which will hopefully solve many of the problems with basic functions that I highlighted in my review. We will likely stay with Changepoint for the foreseeable future.

Alternatives Considered

I love Harvest, especially compared to Archioffice. It's very intuitive, simply designed and easy to use. Perhaps the billing isn't as robust or customizable as Archi, but I would take it over Archi any day.

I have not used any other similar products so I cannot compare them. Changepoint was selected before I joined the company.

Return on Investment

  • It positively organized our time tracking and the reporting was robust enough to use for client meetings.
  • It negatively took up more time to do certain tasks that shouldn't be so time consuming.

  • Employee efficiency has decreased significantly within our Project MAnagement team. The main causes are lack of logical steps/not user-friendly and the slowness of the entire program.
  • Changepoint PSA has greatly improved being able to track budgets for all projects. Before this software, budgets were done manually by hand and cross-referenced with Accounting. Now, we can pull a report out of the system, as long as all parties entered their time and data correctly.
