ConnectWise Manage

Wouldn't be good for small businesses and unless you are providing work that needs to be generated by a ticket, this wouldn't be for you. It's great for companies that need to log specific information for customers and record time entered by employees. It's good for project management, keeping track of financials and time

Pros

  • Time tracking because you can account for almost every single minute of your day with detailed descriptions attached. The reporting of time came in very good use when clients questioned billing.
  • Robust billing portal that was pretty customizable.
  • Could track employee costs well once the correct numbers were placed into the system. Came in very handy for billing and company budgeting and projections.

  • ConnectWise serves as a GREAT Service Desk tool. Being able to aggregate multiple input sources into our ticketing system, define those issues based on an urgency and priority, assigning to the right type of resource and then billing for labor included is something CW is focused around.
  • Being able to use CW as an effective CRM database that is simple and open allows all company employees to search for Company and Contact information. Storing any type of information about a client in CW is as simple as you need it to be.
  • ConnectWise allows all of our IT operations for our Field dispatch division to be managed from a single pane interface that is very intuitive. Being able to get insight into our Field Engineers schedule's is vital for delivering what we promise to our clients.
  • Reporting in CW can be intimidating at times due to the highly detailed and customization of the reports - but provides as much or as little data as you need to generate high quality information.

Cons

  • The overall layout and physical design of the portals could be simplified greatly. The program is anything but intuitive to use.
  • I found myself clicking what felt like a 1,000 times just to complete one small task. Billing was very cumbersome and the program did not integrate smoothly with Quickbooks as was previously promised.
  • Saving and making templates for billing etc. was a tedious process that also cost extra!
  • The program is as good as what you put into it, but they designed the software for a more particular one-sided way to work and manage, so it made customizing a project to your companies methods tricky.
  • Overall a very cumbersome program that looks as if it was designed at the start of the millennium and note 16 years into it.

  • Customer ticket portal is cumbersome and not easy to use.
  • Payments can not be taken by cash or credit card easily or without third party software.
  • A Point of Sale would be a great add on as selling something in store is hard in CW as you need to creat a quote then and invoice and payment can not be made on the ticket with credit card in person or by cash with a cash drawer.

ConnectWise has uniquely positioned themselves with the Modern Office Suite to have direct integration with a nearly full suite of tools for MSPs. Although each tool may not necessarily be the absolute best tool on the market, the efficiencies leveraged through direct integration make the entire suite an obvious choice for most companies.

Thoroughly review the training at ConnectWise University BEFORE starting. Ask questions to other partners - there is a huge community that is more than willing to help. Lastly, I recommend getting ConnectWise Consulting to help - it's a BIG product, and the money you spend on consulting will pay for itself by helping you and your team get off to a running start (in the right direction)

Alternatives Considered

I love Harvest, especially compared to Archioffice. It's very intuitive, simply designed and easy to use. Perhaps the billing isn't as robust or customizable as Archi, but I would take it over Archi any day.

We've evaluated several options in the past, but none offered all the features, integration, and control that ConnectWise does. Autotask is the classic competitor that never quite stacked up, while Kaseya BMS is the newer rival that is also short on some features, as well as being a bit new to the market.

ConnectWise seems to have a good understanding of the IT service industry. During the required onboarding training, they even preach configuring only features that you need right now, as you can always scale up later. The feature set for the most part takes into considerations all aspects of an IT business, whether small or enterprise, or growing from one to the next.

Return on Investment

  • It positively organized our time tracking and the reporting was robust enough to use for client meetings.
  • It negatively took up more time to do certain tasks that shouldn't be so time consuming.

  • Negative: If you don't have ConnectWise properly configured, you can completely mess up your invoicing. There have been several times that we have wrestled to understand why elements are being billed incorrectly only to learn that we didn't set up the billing parameters properly. Once we properly configured the tool, it works just like it is supposed to.
  • Positive: When the entire team is using it as they should, nothing falls through the cracks.
  • Positive: When you get into a "he said - she said" situation with a client, I love the audit trail feature. It can be a great CYA providing evidence that we did what we said we did, complete with time stamps.
