Arcserve Backup

If you have a large enterprise level environment and want to not only improve your backup systems but also implement replication then Arcserve is well suited. If you only have a small number of machines or are primarily Linux based, then the product is simply not suited and there are better alternates out there.

HPE StoreOnce

HPE StoreOnce is well suited for backup an infrastructure that can accommodate a few hours for a total backup. It is quite suitable for your disaster recovery plan for your backups. We are currently using it with Veeam and Oracle products.

Pros

  • Backs up Windows and Linux virtual and physical servers quickly. After the initial full backup, data is deduped and compressed. This dramatically reduced the backup window. Restores are easily accomplished, using intuitive web interfaces.
  • The data is easily replicated between units. Scheduled to occur in the middle of the night, network bandwidth is not dramatically impacted. Truly, a set it and forget it operation.
  • Using the appropriate UDP, administrators can actually "spin up" a virtual machine from the latest backup, allowing disaster recovery on your critical servers while repairing failures in the background.
  • Copy-to-Tape function is available. This satisfies annual and quarterly data retention requirements.

  • File uploads and querying the backup repository is quite fast, given that we have so many backups and a good retention period.
  • A free add on "HPE StoreOnce Catalyst Plugin for RMAN" was a great benefit. We saved the cost of buying an additional backup infrastructure for our databases.

Cons

  • Linux backup status reports are not as granular as the Windows status reports. Linux email reporting does not include missed backup jobs, backup, or replication failures or success.

  • HPE StoreOnce Catalyst Stores do not have a native replication. You will have to rely on third party software to backup your backup files from primary StoreOnce to secondary StoreOnce.
  • We also see disconnects in the HPE StoreOnce Catalyst RMAN Plugin. We are still trying to figure out if this is a StoreOnce issue or something with our network.

Arcserve UDP provides our organization lots of benefits and it is much more than a simple backup and restore solution. We use it for cross platform DR, storage agnostic replications, DR solution instead of VMware SRM and more.

My team who are currently administering HPE StoreOnce do not come from a storage background. We still didn't had to struggle much configuring and using HPE StoreOnce. Of course, HPE team was very helpful in smooth technology transition. For critical errors, we already have phone home feature enabled and HPE support team has been excellent and their response time in dealing with technical errors/incidents.

We had couple of incidents so far and HPE support team was very proactive through the process until the incident was closed satisfactorily.

Alternatives Considered

To be succinct, we have used Veeam B&R for a number of years, against our VM environment, and we have yet to find anything that tops it. However, if you have physical machines in your environment still, then Arcserve is a great option, especially for the replication aspect.
Backup Exec has fallen behind the pack since we used it a number of years ago and changes to the platform have severely weakened the product. Arcserve sits above Backup Exec.
Druva we have just started using, mainly for our laptops, but they do have a cloud-based backup solution that we looked at.

NetApp is a great product and very well established in market. But HPE StoreOnce features like scalability using disk based duplication that lowers the backup footprint. It is very well coupled with HPE Recovery Manager Central provides backup protection and backup efficiency. We were also offered a nice discount while choosing HPE StoreOnce.

Return on Investment

  • We were able to roll back up and replication into one product, which reduced the costs without having to go with multiple vendors.
  • As a result of Arcserve UDP, we were able to implement a full DR scenario test, which until that point hadn't been successful.

  • HPE StoreOnce doesn't require a lot of technical knowledge for day to day administration and management. This helps reducing IT support staff cost.
  • It provides an amazing compaction ratio and saves you a lot on the storage side.
