Sauce Labs

I used to manage my own set of VMs and it was a major time-consuming task, complicated by trying to make sure they were always up/running. Now using Sauce Labs, this is no longer an issue as their VMs are up virtually all the time. This allows me to do more coding and less of the hectic VM management.

Pros

  • Links between requests, changes, and parts are easy to view and audit.
  • Files are easy to attach for engineers and easy to find for everyone.
  • Notifications for changes and required actions are sent to the right people.

  • Always up and running: I'd say 99.9% it's up and running, as I've rarely experienced any down time with their VM farm machines.
  • Reliable: we run our automated tests on their VMs at least every hour, around the clock, and their service is very reliable and working properly.
  • Community: good online community of other people using Sauce Labs with tips/tricks; often see Sauce Labs at conferences and it's nice to talk with them about what they have planned (new features).

Cons

  • Control of automatic updates to our ERP system - we use a manual process because it's so much easier to manage.
No photo available
  • Speed: We've some speed issues with "Live Testing" it's a bit slow and in our agile environment is a little sad.
  • Sauce and Testobject: It's wired to use 2 platforms when it's the same company. I wish it was all Saucelabs...It'd be more useful to explain to all the people that it's another service of the same company.

excellent PLM system, if only it had ERP module for procurement and inventory management

Sauce Labs has become an integral part of our entire continuous delivery pipeline. Our architectural vision for CI/CD simply would not be possible without Sauce Labs given the resource constraints our company has to develop and maintain a solution such as this internally.

It is an incredibly easy service to use for what its primary intention is. The only reason a point is deducted is because more feature enrichment can be done around the Sauce Connect Proxy utility and the Jenkins Sauce OnDemand plugin. User Account administration also needs more work, such as the addition of user groups, rather than a simple hierarchy of users.

Outages with the virtual machine services or the Sauce Connect Proxy service are more frequent than would be ideal, but updates to resolutions are communicated frequently, and resolutions usually come quick.

The execution of automated tests in Sauce Labs virtual machines is slightly slower than its main competition. Furthermore, the spin-up time of virtual machines (particularly device simulators or emulators) is significantly slower in our experience than its primary competition. The Sauce Connect Proxy further adds to performance decrease when used in our experience (around 10%-20% decrease when used), such that each call to the remote WebDriver instance in your test scripts can take upwards of 100-200 milliseconds.

They have helped with issues even when the issue wasn't on their side. The success of my automation scripts was their top priority and they did whatever they had to do to help me get the job done and sometimes that meant helping me with stuff that had nothing to do with them.

If your automation framework is setup correctly and you create your webdriver separate from tests then it should be easy enough to implement Sauce Labs into your testing.

Alternatives Considered

Oracle Agile is the only other product I can recall, since our implementation was over six years ago. I only remember that based on price alone, Oracle's product was not a serious contender for us. I had experience with Agile at a previous company (before it was purchased by Oracle) and at that time it was well-suited to our needs.

I selected Sauce Labs over BrowserStack because of their customer service, their willing to change their security contract, and their training team. BrowserStack would not negotiate their security contract at all, and in their contract it stated if they got sued, so would my company. I do not want to have that over my head and I think that is bad business to not keep your clients safe. Sauce Labs has a great customer service team, and are willing to answer any questions or report bugs if I find any. Finally I have learned a great deal thanks to the constant information they put out on their site. I am able to test better and more thorough thanks to their teams great documentation and learning center.

The product is as scalable as your company's wallet can afford, since you are charged per unit of concurrency, where each new unit of concurrency represents another concurrent virtual machine you can spin up.
