Arena

I work for a contract manufacture and we use Arena for all changes to BOM. This is helpful for customer owned designs and our in house designs. Any company that needs to keep tight revision control of a product should use Arena. It also gives approved employees access to files and documents important to the product.

Sauce Labs

For scenarios/teams that have the appropriate budget for a premium product, Sauce is definitely the route to go. Also, for teams that value folks that sponsor the OSS libraries they use and having that expertise on their team, Sauce is a great choice. I suppose if you're super strapped, don't put value in the above, or care about communication, they may not be a wise fit.

Pros

  • Tracking Changes is extremely easy and looking back at past changes and which items were affected is great.
  • The overall basic UX of Arena is simple enough to grasp and a lot of the different views are conveniently within grasp.
  • Storing all different kinds of file types is useful. From Software data, to powerpoints, to pdfs. Arena handles it all very well and being able to grab the data with one search is extremely effective.

  • Always up and running: I'd say 99.9% it's up and running, as I've rarely experienced any down time with their VM farm machines.
  • Reliable: we run our automated tests on their VMs at least every hour, around the clock, and their service is very reliable and working properly.
  • Community: good online community of other people using Sauce Labs with tips/tricks; often see Sauce Labs at conferences and it's nice to talk with them about what they have planned (new features).

Cons

  • Although Arena has vendor access it is at times very time consuming to set up access to all the parts that they can see (large new assemblies in particular).
  • When very small errors occur during a change (ones that wouldn't affect the content that was approved by the approval group) it would be nice to be able to have a super user that can correct these.
  • All items and fields on an ECO are locked down once a change is routed for approval. It would be nice to have some fields on a change available to edit for users on the approval group and have the materials disposition open to update these for the approval group's area of interest. These changes would also need to be able to have the approval group a tiered concept vs just one whole one.

  • The Jenkins Sauce OnDemand plugin could have more options available to tap into more of the custom capabilities Sauce Labs actually supports. Currently, in order to tap into these capabilities, a programatic solution is required from test code, rather than being able to configure them via the Jenkins plugin UI. For example, things like desktop resolution, browser automation binary versions, remote Selenium version, and browser console logs.
  • Some issues with the Sauce Connect Proxy on our Jenkins servers failing to start, which makes the optimal CI/CD pipeline come to a halt. Better documentation, logging, and more intuitive configuration around the Sauce Connect Proxy would take what is already an industry leading feature to the next level.
  • User account management needs an overhauls, allowing for user groups, rather than just a hierarchy structure.
  • Test job queuing is first-come-first-serve, meaning there is no in-built way to queue batches of jobs from, say, different Jenkins servers/accounts.

excellent PLM system, if only it had ERP module for procurement and inventory management

Sauce Labs has become an integral part of our entire continuous delivery pipeline. Our architectural vision for CI/CD simply would not be possible without Sauce Labs given the resource constraints our company has to develop and maintain a solution such as this internally.

The dashboard is very easy to use. I think the dashboards give great information on how the tests are running. However, I think I have a shallow understanding of Sauce Labs and cannot give an appropriate review. Overall, my experience using Sauce Labs has been enjoyable and it was easy to learn for the first time.

Outages with the virtual machine services or the Sauce Connect Proxy service are more frequent than would be ideal, but updates to resolutions are communicated frequently, and resolutions usually come quick.

The execution of automated tests in Sauce Labs virtual machines is slightly slower than its main competition. Furthermore, the spin-up time of virtual machines (particularly device simulators or emulators) is significantly slower in our experience than its primary competition. The Sauce Connect Proxy further adds to performance decrease when used in our experience (around 10%-20% decrease when used), such that each call to the remote WebDriver instance in your test scripts can take upwards of 100-200 milliseconds.

The support is good for Sauce Labs. It is hard to get an initial response but the support has cleared our issues with Sauce Labs. Sometimes we have to follow up and it's hard to get a hold of the team initially. Once we get a hold of the team, the issues are always resolved.

By far the largest deduction for satisfaction is the lack of complete capability support in the Jenkins Sauce OnDemand plugin's user interface, as well as the lack of being able to queue test jobs by batches. Our organization has multiple Jenkins servers, and each has its own Sauce Labs account for executing tests at built time. If multiple Jenkins servers kick off test batches at the same time, we have to develop a solution internally to manage those collisions.

Alternatives Considered

I'm not aware of similar products, but I do use simpler versioning products, Dropbox and SVN. They are vastly easier to use, but lack a lot of the features provided by Arena. It's not a fair comparison.

BrowserStack captures more market share than Sauce Labs does as of this writing, and thus has a much larger support network. During testing, it was also a little faster to spin-up virtual machines, and substantially quicker spinning-up mobile simulators and emulators. Pricing models were very similar in the enterprise tier. However, while BrowserStack may have been a better choice for manual testing or manually-executed automated tests, Sauce Labs offered a better product and better vision for tests that were left-shifted in a continuous delivery pipeline, which is the architectural direction or company has gone. Their service was proven to better integrate with this pipeline than BrowserStack.

The product is as scalable as your company's wallet can afford, since you are charged per unit of concurrency, where each new unit of concurrency represents another concurrent virtual machine you can spin up.

Return on Investment

  • Arena provides the DHF for our medical device products. If we didn't have Arena's PLM this would be very difficult to manage and would be costly to do offline.
  • Arena's Training module has taken the spreadsheets and personal emails out of the hands of QA and has freed up the personnel to do the things they need to, to work on activities that help to improve and ship our product in a more timely fashion.
  • Arena has an open API and can automatically create and or move the data into or out of the system to another system like Solidworks or an ERP (ones that also are on the cloud).

  • Increased scope coverage
  • Need to budget for tooling during external facing webpage execution.
