Likelihood to Recommend

Arena

I would highly recommend Arena for any small startup up to a well-established company. Arena is very price competitive, easy to configure, and user-friendly. Arena integrates nicely to any existing ERP software or can be linked later in the process as needed.

Sauce Labs

For scenarios/teams that have the appropriate budget for a premium product, Sauce is definitely the route to go. Also, for teams that value folks that sponsor the OSS libraries they use and having that expertise on their team, Sauce is a great choice. I suppose if you're super strapped, don't put value in the above, or care about communication, they may not be a wise fit.

Pros

Arena

  • Arena allows for easy customization and this is beneficial because the company can set up the PLM to meet their specific needs and tailor it to their business.
  • The interface is very user friendly and this helps to eliminate the apprehension of using a system for an employee who is not a computer expert.
  • Policies and user groups allow administrators to control what certain employees can and cannot see. This control keeps data accuracy intact and helps to create a structured approach to data acquisition.

Sauce Labs

  • Incredibly cheap.
  • The service is outstanding. They provide me with the combinations of browsers/platforms that make it easy for me to do my job.
  • Sauce Labs accelerates and optimizes the tests by running them through console logs, metadata, and Selenium with complete lists of compatible commands.

Cons

Arena

  • There were a few fields that we could not modify. They were standard fields that Arena would only allow specific data. It would have been nice to be able to modify the field and customize as we wished.
  • We wish there was a shared user license. There are some users that might only use the product once per month. It would be nice if they did not need to hold their own user license to access information.
  • When approving changes or requests, or completing a task in a project, it would be nice if the system automatically notified all down stream users with open items that the task was completed.

Sauce Labs

  • Cost: it's a little bit pricey, but I don't pay the bill so I'm not complaining too much there. Overall, I'd say the price isn't ridiculous but it's not inexpensive.
  • Logs: I don't find their logs very useful for front-end web tests, I usually refer to my own logs if I have a bug/issue/error that needs investigation.

excellent PLM system, if only it had ERP module for procurement and inventory management

Sauce Labs has become an integral part of our entire continuous delivery pipeline. Our architectural vision for CI/CD simply would not be possible without Sauce Labs given the resource constraints our company has to develop and maintain a solution such as this internally.

I think Sauce Labs is great and I've been using them since late 2014. With that said, I'm very used to how their interface works and how to get what I need. I think if a brand new user would come in and use it, it would still be easy, but maybe not as easy as it is for me. That's why I rate this area a 9 instead of a 10. Still great though!

Outages with the virtual machine services or the Sauce Connect Proxy service are more frequent than would be ideal, but updates to resolutions are communicated frequently, and resolutions usually come quick.

The execution of automated tests in Sauce Labs virtual machines is slightly slower than its main competition. Furthermore, the spin-up time of virtual machines (particularly device simulators or emulators) is significantly slower in our experience than its primary competition. The Sauce Connect Proxy further adds to performance decrease when used in our experience (around 10%-20% decrease when used), such that each call to the remote WebDriver instance in your test scripts can take upwards of 100-200 milliseconds.

The support is good for Sauce Labs. It is hard to get an initial response but the support has cleared our issues with Sauce Labs. Sometimes we have to follow up and it's hard to get a hold of the team initially. Once we get a hold of the team, the issues are always resolved.

I am not sure if it's my company that makes getting Sauce Labs integrated into the team difficult or is it Sauce Labs. The process for getting Sauce Labs for a project is quite a tedious process and the information for using Sauce Labs initially is quite lacking. There is little support for getting started

Alternatives Considered

Arena

We were looking at using our ERP - IQMS to take the place of Arena but it didn't even come close to having the functionality and ease of use that Arena has. Omnify PLM came in and gave a demonstration and the management team choose Arena over them in a vote that wasn't even close.

Sauce Labs

We found Sauce Labs to be better in the following:1) Better selection of mobile devices (including all the new devices)2) Supports many CI tools like Jenkins, CircleCI3) Availability of test metricsWe also had a better experience using Sauce Labs overall. It was easy to create users in the application. It is also very easy to get your existing automated test suite running on Sauce Labs.

The product is as scalable as your company's wallet can afford, since you are charged per unit of concurrency, where each new unit of concurrency represents another concurrent virtual machine you can spin up.

Return on Investment

Arena

  • Since we haven't introduced a product, this is a difficult question to answer with a useful number. I can say that Arena has become a tool that everyone in the organization counts on and is the first place to look for anything.

Sauce Labs

  • Sauce Labs is less expensive than setting up the same amount of OS/browser combinations locally
  • But real mobile devices are too expensive, so it's cheaper to buy and set it up locally
  • But overall it's still a good investment
