ARIS Business Process Management (BPM)

In case you have a LOT of processes and know-how of these processes are not documented, thus making your company depend on specific people, ARIS is a good tool to document processes that manage complex relationships between functions, people, IT systems, input and output documents, and scenarios. It is also good for reporting, for example, once you complete documenting all your processes, you can simply get a response to "in what processes is Excel used?" because ARIS will give you just that, and is capable of more.

Blueworks Live

Blueworks is well suited when only process modeling needs to be done, when processes from Visio need to be converted, and when end to end integrated flows need to be createdIt's less appropriate when enterprise-wide architecture modeling is needed like org charts, application architecture, if it has to be integrated with SAP SolMan, and when simulation needs to be done.

Blueworks Live

  • Business user-friendly - most business people can start to utilize BWL very quickly.
  • Easy way to capture and build processes starting with the discovery map.
  • Central repository for a single truth for areas to go to. Business architects can understand the current process and begin to do to-be models. Business Analysts can know where to go and start to get the current as-Is model, rather than spending time and effort trying to capture the information from SMEs to just get a project started.

Cons

ARIS Business Process Management (BPM)

  • Installation of ARIS to users
  • Management of user/architect accounts

  • IBM should offer this solution as a complementary service for Business Partners and Customers on engagements so one could strategically document and uncover new opportunities to cross sell.
  • It could be of real value for smaller companies and more available if the price point is lower so all clients can leverage the savings and include the entire organization rather than a select few.
  • Connectors to third party would help.

I am a BPM and Enterprise Architect Consultant and hence have been using different BPM and EA tools for consulting practice. Until now I have used Opentext Provision EA,Sparx EA, MS Visio and IBM Blueworks. All of the tools used are good and have their own unique features and capabilities. ARIS BPA is widely used by my current organization for different projects.

It has good, even complex functionality that is provided by its library and ability to create relations between items, yet it is not hard to use. Anyone can use it in a short time. It provides reporting abilities and good documentation with the availability of exporting options. The only drawback I have seen was user management/login issues.

Alternatives Considered

ARIS Business Process Management (BPM)

Features like SAP Solman Sync, Alfabet EA integration (another Software AG product) and a well defined framework for BPM or any consulting practice across any verticals or domains is useful in a consulting practice, whether it's TOGAF methodology, running a BPM Lifecycle or Six Sigma process analysis.
The vendor continuously brings updated versions to the market with bug fixes from earlier versions and fulfills users'/customer expectations, so they are inline with continuous improvement.

Blueworks Live

Blueworks is relatively simple and much easier to use and at a lower cost compared to ARIS. However, Blueworks does not support modeling like risk universe, org charts, etc. like in ARIS. Also, advanced simulation is not possible in Blueworks unlike in ARIS. The number of BPMN symbols in Blueworks is limited.

Return on Investment

ARIS Business Process Management (BPM)

  • Documentation of processes made it possible for anyone to see who does what, how and using what systems.
  • Dependency on specific people is eliminated.
Anonymous | TrustRadius Reviewer

Blueworks Live

  • The primary benefit and ROI is around whiteboarding and process discovery.
  • It's lacking if you need to go down to level 3 documentation for system interfaces.
