Articulate Storyline

I think Storyline is great for self-reviews. It is fairly easy to set up a "Drag and Drop" slide with a few questions to drag over to the right answer. You can use pictures and graphics to make it more appealing and interactive. It is also very useful for training processes. For example, if you wanted to show someone how to use a specific program, you can use screenshots and screen video captures to help show the process. I think it would be harder to use Storyline for a class lecture or just for videos. For example, if you wanted to record a physical classroom, or record a screen capture in which you are just using screen captures.

Axonify

Axonify is perfect for serving up MUST-KNOWs to staff. Safety and compliance related topics are best. Axonify is not currently suited as a full-on LMS for more intensive training, like webinars or soft skill training. Due to this, there is not as much incentive for high-level executive employees to engage since they usually have a good handle on compliance training and find it a waste of time.

Pros

  • It is a versatile tool that can create a wide variety of eLearning experiences.
  • It interfaces well with SCORM Cloud, which is what we use for dispatching eCourses to clients.
  • It is fairly inexpensive for a single user license.

  • Great user interface. Intuitive. Simple. Clean look.
  • Easy to access reports that deliver well for C-Suite presentations.
  • Simple gamification structure with well-thought out reward design.
  • Amazing customer service team that passes on our feedback to design team and, get this, oftentimes actually implements our ideas. Gotta love that!
  • Bite-sized learning that is served quickly while maintaining high-quality.

Cons

  • Responsive- this is a matter of perspective. On one hand, responsive sites are becoming the norm, and sites are arranging themselves to better fit on a device's available space and orientation. On the other, if a designer creates a software simulation or a presentation design ("slide") for a specific presentation, rearranging those assets is not following the designer's intent (this is why Articulate scales, but doesn't have true responsiveness). I see both sides, but may want to see some options to set breakpoints to arrange items for different sizes or orientations in future versions.
  • Articulate is an early adopter of xAPI, and pretty standard features are reporting in xAPI streams, but seeing expansion of xAPI options in triggers would be an amazing feature set to expand
  • Wish I had more to say, but those are the only things I could think of after building over 100 courses in the tool.

  • The results display for surveys tends to cut off comments. There should be a better export option to save editing time on our end when generating reports.
  • I would like to be able to see the amount people spent to win prizes on the Reports>>Winners page.
  • Live Polling, registration, and electronic QA feature in Events section (like EventMobi).

Likelihood to Renew

Articulate Storyline6.0
Based on 21 answers
We are moving away from the standalone eCourse model, so depending upon when that shift happens, we might choose not to renew since we won't be supporting eCourses built in Articulate Storyline anymore. As long as we are still selling and supporting those eCourses, we will continue to renew the licenses we have.

Usability

Articulate Storyline7.8
Based on 15 answers
This is by far the most accessible product for creating eLearning. A new user can become quite competent in using Articulate in a short period of time and become proficient in less than a year. I imagine that becoming an expert may take two years or more of consistent use, but even that is a short period of time.

Support

Articulate Storyline10.0
Based on 10 answers
Articulate depends on both staff and individual users to support their products through their "ELearning Heroes" website. The site provides for a useful means by which customers can rise to the level of expert in solving problems or "Hero". Because requests for help are posted in either a support or user forum, you can expect to get answers quickly to problems. Sometimes the staff may be busy and so answers may take some time.

Online Training

Articulate Storyline5.1
Based on 3 answers
I love the fact that both a demonstration AND text version of the tutorials are available. Our firewall was blocking the demos until I requested my company allow them! Having the text version available still enabled me to learn from the tutorials. They are very well done and informative, and there is a tutorial for just about anything you need to learn to do with Storyline. I have always been more than satisfied with the support and training available to us for all Articulate products and I love the community!

Implementation

Articulate Storyline10.0
Based on 9 answers
Outside of having to dedicate a powerful enough PC for the installation and having to update Flash in our browsers there really isn't much pain involved in using Articulate. For the most part this is an easy to implement and roll-out product. The installation occurs quickly and smoothly with no additional steps needed.

Alternatives Considered

Storyline is, hands down, the best of the rapid eLearning development tools I've tested. I selected Storyline because of the free trial. After playing with it for a couple of hours, I was already creating better courses than I had ever created in any other tool. And this was without any training. After getting my hands on some tutorials that covered the layer, state, and variable topics, I felt like I was a force to be reckoned with -- much more so than my colleagues using "lesser tools".

Scalability

Articulate Storyline9.1

It is easy to train new users and manage content. Being able to import older projects and PPT files makes it very easy to use for a lot of "moonlighters" in our department.

Return on Investment

  • Faster design and development
  • More control over maintenance and translations
  • Huge cost saver for e-learning spending by selecting it as our in-house authoring tool

  • Before, we could not accurately measure if people were really reviewing our monthly safety material or really reading our new policy releases. Now we have nearly 100% compliance.
  • Over the past two years since we implemented Axonify, we have seen a decrease of $200,000 in our workers comp annual cost. We expect this trend to continue or stay stable due to a staff that is more aware of safety.
  • We maintain our position as a San Francisco and Silicon Valley Best Place to Work due to our high morale and employee engagement level. 99% of our employees engage with Axonify an average of 13x per month. This ranking has made us an leader in affordable housing with some of the best staff members in our industry.
