Customizing interactions is one of its strongest points. Again, if you can dream up the interaction, there is probably a way to use triggers, variables, conditions and states to achieve it. Although the initial learning curve is a little steep, if you put in the time, you can really get the power out of the tool to accomplish some really great things! Their community is a great place to shorten the learning curve quickly.

NetLearning works great if you are a consultant and you are using the LMS on that project.

Pros

  • The use of the timeline and triggers within Storyline help to create, well time and interactive courses.
  • Being able to use and program variables within the course allows you to keep track of what your learners are doing, as well as recall information or create branching scenarios.
  • The Community.... The community behind Articulate is priceless! Want to do something and don't know how to do it? You can find various posts to assist you or even ask it as a question in the community to get an answer. Not to mention the support that Articulate itself provides is amazing.

  • When submitting tickets for NetLearning, the helpdesk is quick to respond to requests.
  • When helping you with a NetLearning issue, the helpdesk will call and walk you through what was incorrect, so that you know how to fix it in the future.

Cons

  • More preloaded design features would make it a little easier for rapid development.
  • Although Storyline 2 has more (and better) audio features, it would be nice to have a place to edit the audio within your course. (By edit I mean to do more advanced functions, they do provide basic audio editing functionality.

  • The NetLearning University Anytime Links are not accurate. So, after trying to fix an issue myself, I had wasted a large portion of time trying to follow directions and complete myself.
  • The training times are in a different time zone and most of them are before I start work for the day.

We can easily convert our older content into Storyline 2 courses, which makes updates a breeze. We've been well-pleased with the software, Articulate's dedication to releasing bug fixes and new features, and the fact that it is well-received by our associates and stakeholders.

We will continue using NetLearning because it does what we need it to do from a compliance and educational standpoint.

Usability

It does what we need it to. We create computer based learning and occasionally have someone use the tool via a tablet. It works great for that! If you were going to use it on a smartphone, I am not sure it would be the best choice. Since most formal eLearning courses are better suited to a larger screen then I would rate it highly every time.

The Articulate staff and user community converge into the invaluable resource known as the eLearning Heroes Community. You can go there for anything ranging from tech help, inspiration, and though provoking discussion. They don't just support you using the software, they support you in your career as an Instructional Designer or eLearning Developer, and no one else offers that on the same level as Articulate.

Online Training

I love the fact that both a demonstration AND text version of the tutorials are available. Our firewall was blocking the demos until I requested my company allow them! Having the text version available still enabled me to learn from the tutorials. They are very well done and informative, and there is a tutorial for just about anything you need to learn to do with Storyline. I have always been more than satisfied with the support and training available to us for all Articulate products and I love the community!

Alternatives Considered

Articulate Storyline is head and shoulders above the other tools on the market. It truly combines the features of most rapid e-Learning tools on the market in one easy-to-use tool. And, the Articulate community is just a bonus addition...no other company's support can compare to what Articulate provides.

I have used HealthStream to manage classes for another hospital, but find that NetLearning has many more options and ability to go above and beyond with educating our employees.

It is easy to train new users and manage content. Being able to import older projects and PPT files makes it very easy to use for a lot of "moonlighters" in our department.

Return on Investment

  • The cost of outsourcing can be ridiculous, and even if you can afford it, most of your time is then taken up by project management. Storyline in worth its weight in "cyber gold"!
  • I took a three-day class offered by Yukon learning and gain a superb foundation. Taking some sort of formal training will allow you to see huge gains early.
  • I DO NOT like how Storyline 360 is now a subscription-based model. I prefer being able to buy a standalone license like you could with Storyline2.

  • HealthcareSource NetLearning provides learning in a far more effective way than live courses.
  • The work and development done outside of the program to make it more user friendly from an administrator stand-point can be great.
