Articulate Storyline

Articulate Storyline is well-suited for providing engaging, interactive training modules for any range of learning topics. It is not very well suited for exams, although they do advertise as having a robust exam feature. While the exam feature is indeed robust, it is also a heavy load for users' computers so a classic HTML-based testing software is very much preferred!

ProProfs LMS Software

Well-suited for:
  • Teachers who want to give their quizzes to many students (not just through their own university's LMS).
  • Teachers who don't need something to dazzle their students.

Pros

  • The Online Community is an amazing conglomeration of professionals that are always willing to assist a developer with ideas, troubleshooting, and more. Just having someone available to talk to about how to create your vision within the software is invaluable.
  • The user interface is familiar and easily navigable. If you've used MS Office products, then you'll know where you are and where to go find what you need. Since Office is everywhere, I'd bet you're familiar.
  • I wasn't on board, initially, with the subscription model. I've found that it is a great idea for a variety of reasons. Interactivity with the other products (Review and Rise) is outstanding and flawless.
  • The formats that are available for export are great as well. As I stated earlier, the ability to export as a website really helped me create something special for a particular client that has resulted in that website being used across thousands of locations worldwide. Pretty powerful stuff there.

Cons

  • Learning the more advanced features of Storyline does take some time. When I was learning Storyline, I was able to set aside about 45 minutes at the beginning of each day to watch 1 or 2 tutorial videos and then practice what I had just learned. I got up to speed very quickly this way! And once you have some advanced skills with Storyline, that's where the fun really begins!
  • Some of the output options aren't ideal. For example, you can publish an activity to a DVD, but the output is an exe file, which some computers won't run. Also the Word doc output is fairly terrible looking. (Although, if you have a little skill with Word styles, you can easily fit it up.)

I've actually extended my previous 3 year contract with Articulate into a 6 year contract. After that I expect to add another 3 years... The cost for our licenses and any additional we might need is very fair and the return on investment is achieved in a matter of months, weeks even.

Usability

The basics are easy to learn but you won't get really robust activities from using just the basics. However, if you can invest the time in learning how to use all of Storyline's features, you'll have tremendous learning development power at your fingertips. I do have to say, though, that there is a beautiful logic to how everything in Storyline works. Once you learn a few of the advanced features, you can learn them all because there's a similar underlying logic. The interface is also very appealing and friendly.

Support

Articulate Storyline10.0

Articulate depends on both staff and individual users to support their products through their "ELearning Heroes" website. The site provides for a useful means by which customers can rise to the level of expert in solving problems or "Hero". Because requests for help are posted in either a support or user forum, you can expect to get answers quickly to problems. Sometimes the staff may be busy and so answers may take some time.

ProProfs has great marketing, a decent product, adequate-to-poor support, and a very under-staffed support team. I've been a steady customer for five years because their quizmaker product is easy to use, and students have a generally positive experience with the quizzes I make. When there are glitches, for example, a quiz is scored incorrectly, I report the glitch, but support doesn't actually fix the grading glitch; instead, a support staff will go to the quiz and manually grade it, then send me an email announcing that the "issue" has been resolved. That's not a resolution. That's a band-aid, and the ProProfs support team doesn't seem willing to dig deeper for a real fix. There have been no visible improvements to the product over 5 years. ProProf quizzes are very Web 2.0, similar to Moodle. Other LMS services I've used, iSpring and Bookwidgets offer cool features like drag-and-drop, but ProProfs doesn't seem interested in keeping up with these enhancements. ProProfs seems satisfied to market to the PC institutional training end-user, not the smartphone individual student end-user. When I make suggestions to ProProfs, I get a boilerplate response that such enhancements are "on our future road map" or some such. I get the feeling that there's no roadmap. Twice we set up appointments so that I could talk with SOMEONE at ProProfs to gauge their sincerity about enhancements and so on, and both times ProProfs did not connect with me. That's a bit suspicious.

Online Training

Articulate Storyline5.1

I love the fact that both a demonstration AND text version of the tutorials are available. Our firewall was blocking the demos until I requested my company allow them! Having the text version available still enabled me to learn from the tutorials. They are very well done and informative, and there is a tutorial for just about anything you need to learn to do with Storyline. I have always been more than satisfied with the support and training available to us for all Articulate products and I love the community!

Alternatives Considered

Personally, I think that Articulate Storyline is one of the best development software used for eLearning. While each software has their own special features, I think that Articulate Storyline does the best to incorporate all the main aspects of developing a course. It is definitely my go to software whenever [I'm] developing.

It is easy to train new users and manage content. Being able to import older projects and PPT files makes it very easy to use for a lot of "moonlighters" in our department.
