Articulate Studio

It works for PowerPoint trained people. The software allows you to create a quick turnaround courses. It is better for students that do not have as much computer "savvy" but want to provide professional looking courses.

Pros

  • Converts PowerPoint Presentations into e-learning modules quickly.
  • It has a quick and easy learning curve.
  • The supplemental programs like Quiz Maker and Engage allow a user to create expanded content that would be virtually impossible with just PowerPoint. It give the designer a professional course look and feel.

  • Blackboard is very detailed. It has all the bells and whistles anyone can ask for in a Learning Management system. Especially for the instructor. Features like the retention center keeps the instructors engaged and helps students who may need a little extra attention.
  • Blackboard is very easy for the students and the instructors to use. There are a lot of training materials developed by Blackboard (and by other schools), including written manuals and videos that students and instructors can watch.
  • Blackboard has a lot extra features in modules that can be downloaded and installed by the administrator that can make your instance unique to any other school.
  • Blackboard is very helpful and quick to provide a solution when there is an issue. The technical support is fantastic and are always willing to help you with any issue.

Cons

  • There are at times a problem with PowerPoint and its connectivity with the program. It is an add in to PowerPoint and sometimes they don't "talk." I am not sure if this is a solved situation with the latest versions of PowerPoint with Studio, since I have only used it with PowerPoint 2010 or older.
  • It doesn't have the advanced features that the Storyline product provides, and it doesn't have the advanced updates and capabilities of the new Articulate 360.

  • Blackboard Support representatives should be more knowledgeable of their products. This is detrimental during busy times throughout the academic year.
  • Software add-ons are not always functional and easily integrated with the platform.
  • The Grade Center layout and options do not allow for full customization by the instructor (attendance capability, using personalized calculation formulas, etc.).

There is very little chance that this software wold not be renewed. It has become an integral part of our standard software for elearning development.

There are several aspects of Desire2Learn that outweigh the benefits of using Blackboard. I find that the Desire2Learn system is a bit more user friendly and looks more up-to-date. However, the decision to renew systems is not up to me because the entire University uses the same system. Regardless, I think I would choose Desire2Learn over Blackboard because of its improved user interface.

This is very useable software even for novice eLearning authoring users. People with some PowerPoint experience should be fine with this software and even Excel!

Blackboard is very easy to use. A handful of faculty struggle with the Grade Center, but overall, there is very little support needs for day to day Blackboard usage.

Support

Overall support is great for issues that they are able to help with. Other times it seems like instead of fixing the bugs you are told to wait for the newest version so instead of getting a fix for free you have to pay to upgrade. I have found this frustrating

The majority of tickets are answered and resolved quickly, but every once in a while a ticket gets "escalated" and then the next tier of support is much slower in following up.

Blackboard's Managed Hosting was top-notch in getting us up and running quickly.

Alternatives Considered

I have used Captivate, Articulate Studio, Storyline 1 and StoryLine2 and participated in the beta tests for Articulate 360. Studio is the simplest of the items. I like any of the Articulate products more than Captivate. It has a steep learning curve and I don't think course change is nearly as easy if you need to do updates or changes.

Blackboard's discussion board and email system is more user friendly than that of Desire2Learn. I found it to be significantly easier to send mass group emails in Blackboard. However, the course content organization of Desire2Learn tends to be more intuitive and easier to navigate. Quizzes and assignment submission are about the same when the two systems are compared. In general appearance, Desire2Learn tends to look better than Blackboard.

Return on Investment

  • More affordable pricing would help students to practice and learn the software while working on their school projects. Subscription plans also helps to keep the budget under control.
No photo available
  • Increased efficiency of student to student interaction as well as student to teacher interaction.
  • Increased student comprehension of complex topics through the use of a discussion board which allowed students to clarify issues for one another.
  • Blackboard increased student access to relevant course materials at no cost to the student. This provides a nice alternative to costly readers or textbooks.
