Asigra

It's key to work out what your clients' requirements are, we often find that clients requirements are wide and often do not have a single 'system' such as vmware servers that need to be backed up. Working out exactly what environments your clients require allows you to identify the software that will meet your clients' requirements.

Data Domain

Best suited for backup target, that's what it was designed for. The ingestion rate is very high, data exfil not so much. Doesn't work very well as a NAS (though functionally, that's what it is). It's very good at block-level deduplication of disparate types of data.

Pros

  • True end to End Offering, There are very few operating systems or applications that Asigra doesn't support.
  • Deduplication & Compression: Asigra's deduplication and compression settings allows us to reduce our clients expendature on cloud backup
  • Channel Only: Asigra is only available via the channel and each partner is allocated a 'Partner Success Manager' Who ensures your partnership is successful .

  • High data ingestion rate. For inline dedupe, these devices can ingest a saturated Gigabit Ethernet line, plus a FibreChannel from an AS/400.
  • High reliability. In ten years of having at least two units and ingesting 1.5 to 2TB/night of backups, we've replaced maybe three disk drives.
  • Scalability. Dedupe ratios are very good (11:1 for us for all data), and the DD2500 models allow addition of disk trays to expand capacity.
  • Ease of use. Management interface is good, the free Data Domain Management Center Appliance is even better.

Cons

  • Asigra operates within the realm of the APIs provided by the application vendors. If there are limitations in the Microsoft or VMWare API, there will be a limitation to how Asigra protects that data.
  • Asigra is currently working on an overhaul on the GUI experience. This overhaul is much needed. They are promising this new GUI hopefully in the next release.

  • VMware integration from a restoration perspective.
  • Initial ingestion for data can get bloated at first it would be nice to see a better estimation of what you most likely will see after dedupe and compression completes.
  • Better data aging and deletion capabilities, we see periodic bloating with lower retention policies.

We have tried and used many products. Asigra met all of our objectives and was the best fit for our ideal clients. Asigra works well with SMB and enterprise environments. All components have redundancy options so you can build a true "no single point of failure" system.

DD has performed flawlessly for almost 10 years as our backup/recovery storage with offsite replication. Given its track record and great support from EMC, we're unlikely to look elsewhere any time soon.

Reliability and Availability

Asigra8.8
Based on 5 answers
At the front of Asigra availability is the N+1 capabilities of the DS-System. Multiple nodes that load balance and are fault tolerant giving the DS-System a robust availability offering. The N+1 can survive as long as 50% +1 of the nodes are running. Data availability is strong via Asigra's replication module. Both bidirectional and unidirectional replication for the DS-System exist. Bidirectional replication requires the MSP to purchase double the licensing. That cost is going to be passed on to the customer. Many MSP's opt for the unidirectional, which requires a manual switch over on the DS-License server to change a replication vault to a production vault. With that being said, Asigra replication is very efficient and allows for multiple, in-region and out-region backup vaults. The DS-System works best on Linux utilizing PostgreSQL for the backend database. Ideally, this should be clustered. Clustering a PostgreSQL database is not as straight forward as doing it with Microsoft. That adds some administrative overhead and requires some PostgreSQL expertise end users and MSP's have to find. The Windows DS-Client, the piece doing the backup, can be gridded for a multi-node backup cluster. Unfortunately, the Linux DS-Client cannot be gridded.

Online Training

Asigra1.0
Based on 1 answer
Anything training past level 1 and level 2 is a waste of time. They do not offer training, just an exam and require you to read 2500 pages of their documentation as their training. They are selling you something which you already have. Training exams are far fetched and cover topics hidden within the documentation. A lot of their documentation does not match across itself. They don't even follow the standard versions Major.Minor.ServicePack.Hotfix. They use the MAJOR.MAJOR.MAJOR.Hotfix method, which doesn't match their documentation. They require you to take training in order to keep your engaged hybrid partnership. If you ask me personally, their training is a scam to make more money.

Quick to install, easy to create jobs, schedules and retention policies. No large cycles of setting up backup volumes or trash volumes. Retention job itself configures the BLM functionality so you don't need an expertise to handle the BLM module separately.

Alternatives Considered

Asigra has more functionality. It has a very simple and smart licensing model. The Asigra company has great service on all levels, from sales to technical and end customer service. The software itself is very stable and functional. It has all our requirements as a cloud backup service provider for customers in all sectors, including the health sector.

We looked at new tape libraries, mostly. At the time, Data Domain was pretty much the only game in town besides Exagrid, and I had previous experience with DD at a former job.

Return on Investment

  • Strong ROI through Annuity revenue model
  • Low cost of entry with the ability to scale
  • Improved use of LAN WAN through backup optimisation
Richard Gaudin profile photo
  • We were able to avoid upgrading/replacing a very expensive tape library. ROI was break-even the first year.
  • We cut almost one man-hour per day in tape-handling duties.
  • Restore of large data sets (an entire GroupWise post office, for instance) was cut from 15 hours to 15 minutes.
