I have been working with backup solutions for around 14 years now. Asigra is one solution that has a wide range of features and functionalities while retaining the simplicity of usage and making it a very simple product to learn and start using.What is also important is the post sales support wherein the product code is done so well that you rarely need to engage Asigra's support team for escalations and support calls. On top of it, Asigra technical support works very well to ensure you are taken care of well & quickly. This is one of the most important things that you look for while evaluating any product as you need to have the right people around you when you are in trouble.

Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance

For a purely virtualized environment, I love it. I recommend using it with fast storage if you want to benefit from the Instant Recovery feature. If you have slow storage like a USB disk drive - Instant Recovery may not be fun for you.

  • UniTrends instant recovery feature is just that, instant recovery. As long as your backup storage resides on fast storage, once you click the 'Instant recovery' button, the server is accessible within a few seconds.
  • Support is tremendous. Like most backup solutions, UniTrends has not been without issues. Every time I have engaged support, I have been incredibly impressed with their willingness to assist and their ability to resolve our issues.
  • The new interface is intuitive and easy to use.

  • Detailed activity monitoring is a little lacking. For example. I'd like to know the speed of replication but, instead of Gbps numbers, I only see 1/4, 2/4... etc.
  • Clarification of the 'Tear Down' feature used for getting rid of recent restores is slightly counter-intuitive. I expect this to give me the option of just releasing the management of the restore from the Unitrends appliance. However, I have deleted the live machine out of my VMware environment and had to restore again once - now I'm a little hesitant to do the tear downs. A warning 'You are about to delete the active recovered machine' or a 'click here to remove the Tear Down prompt from the Unitrends interface or click HERE to delete the recovered machine' would be helpful.
  • Agent installations are not as intuitive as I think they could be. If you are only backing up VMs with no application awareness, it's great. If you need SQL-aware or Cisco UC-aware backups, it's more difficult.

Over 6 consecutive years our Asigra Backend had 99.99% uptime and provided 7x24 data restore availability.
Software is robust in operations, provides N+1 node architecture to protect against failure of half of the nodes (majority of the nodes still up) and software based replication to protect against data loss across two geographically independent datacenter locations. Why not 10 points? Some major upgrades still require short downtime within a planned maintenance windows.

Until dealing with Unitrends support, I have NEVER in 25 years of IT, dealt with technical staff that can actually SOLVE your problem the first time!! It's incredible if you ask me! The technical staff at Unitrends is by far the best!

Anything training past level 1 and level 2 is a waste of time. They do not offer training, just an exam and require you to read 2500 pages of their documentation as their training. They are selling you something which you already have. Training exams are far fetched and cover topics hidden within the documentation. A lot of their documentation does not match across itself. They don't even follow the standard versions Major.Minor.ServicePack.Hotfix. They use the MAJOR.MAJOR.MAJOR.Hotfix method, which doesn't match their documentation.They require you to take training in order to keep your engaged hybrid partnership. If you ask me personally, their training is a scam to make more money.

Quick to install, easy to create jobs, schedules and retention policies. No large cycles of setting up backup volumes or trash volumes. Retention job itself configures the BLM functionality so you don't need an expertise to handle the BLM module separately.

The Unitrends employees involved in the installation were very friendly and knowledgeable. A certain degree of hiccups can be expected during any installation but never shook my confidence because of the friendly and knowledgeable team that was assigned to my project.

Return on Investment

  • We view Asigra as having a positive impact on our business. Over the years we have supported many many different kinds of backup and recovery tools and most have too many holes to build your business around.
  • In any sales cycle you hate to be eliminated early on because you can't address a client's technical requirement. With Asigra this almost never happens which means you always make the short list and by then it's less about technology and more about the economics of a deal.
  • We use proof-of-concepts regularly during the sales cycle. As the Arigra technology is agentless we never really have to bother the client to install software on the target devices and no reboots are required. This makes getting the client up and running quickly very easy. Most software that we've used in the past just isn't built this way.

  • There are no negative impacts on our organization using the Unitrends device.
  • I have used the unitrends device to recover individual files lost by users, servers because of disc failures, servers because of malware or ransomeware, and desktops that I just thought it would be cool to show people how the baremetal product works.
