Asigra

Asigra is very well suited for a mixed environment... physical, virtual servers; endpoint devices; mixed platforms/OS, Windows, Linux, Unix, AIX, MacX server, iphones/ipads, etc...Questions to ask- focus on security, on the encryption key and who has access, how data is protected from unauthorized access.Question: Are you sure you can always restore your data from your current backup repository? How does your backup software protect against data corruption?Question: how man people do you need to manage your current backup and recovery infrastructure and, do you need people with advanced IT skills to run this solution for your company?

Zerto

If you have very large VMDKs (Virtual Machine Disk), failing snapshots or failing Microsoft VSS processes, then Zerto is the product.
If you have limited CPU or storage space or speed, Zerto is the answer.
If you need "nearly" instant RPO and very fast RTO, Zerto is the answer.
If you don't have the platform issues or are not concerned with RPO and RTO, and cost is a driver, then other products can have an advantage.

Pros

  • True end to End Offering, There are very few operating systems or applications that Asigra doesn't support.
  • Deduplication & Compression: Asigra's deduplication and compression settings allows us to reduce our clients expendature on cloud backup
  • Channel Only: Asigra is only available via the channel and each partner is allocated a 'Partner Success Manager' Who ensures your partnership is successful .

  • Anyone with a large disk (VMDK) knows the issues of VMware snapshots. Most backup software is a "point in time backup" that uses snapshots. While the backup can be run multiple times per day the stress of the snapshot on the host and storage is eliminated by the continuous protection of Zerto log replication.
  • A client had a the disks on a VM go missing for some reason. We had them "flip the switch" for a real fail over and press the fail over button. The VM on our DR site started to come alive as the VM at the customer site was brought down. When the DR VM was fully up, automatic reverse replication started. The DR machine was available in a few minutes (to take into account different host hardware) for access. One the vm at both sites were in sync, we had the customer again repeat the fail over process and the DR site VM was turned off and the Production site VM was brought back on line. This was a 200 GB VM and the whole process was finished in about 3 hours.
  • Zerto also allows for "Test" fail overs that can be configured on many different functions, such as host, datastore, network and IP usage. Configuring the IPs is crucial to avoid inadvertent site cross contamination of the same VM.
  • Zerto can also retrieve files from any VM disk on the DR site without starting a VM. Very handy for retrieving files or directories.
  • Since Zerto is running continuous log replication, changes on the production VM are nearly instantaneously copied to the DR site. As with any data process, having sufficient bandwidth for "churn" peaks minimizes the delay in updating the DR site.

Cons

  • Intuitive GUI - Cosmetic
  • Phone App based dashboard / management console - Nice to have
  • Lite version for SOHO / small smb customers

  • Zerto is in the process of update their "Offsite Backup" process. This is a scheduled snapshot of a VM that extends the "point in time" beyond the up to 14 days of granular recovery. For those wanting to have a "compliance copy" of a vm (db or exchange or files) this is mechanism that will be improving.
  • Zerto is an evolving product that takes user input seriously. They encourage recommended improvements and features from customers.
  • One thing Zerto can't do is backup a turned off VM. Many snapshot based backup software products can backup a turned off VM.
  • While many backup products are install, create backups and go, Zerto requires a bit of planning on the initial network configuration. Installing the software and configuration is actually easy, setting up a VPN between sites needs planning, particularly for MSPs. Once the VPN is set up the rest is quite easy. This is being addressed.

  • Asigra is a great entry way into the cloud.
  • Compliance is a tricky thing. Jumping backup software means having to deal with previous copies somehow. Asigra is built for the long haul.
  • Asigra is continuing to increase their feature stack. They have made huge steps in the VM backup in the last 3 years and continue to implement features there.
  • As far as cloud backup software goes, there are many that can do it, but none that do it as well as Asigra.

We really like the easy setup of this replication solution, as well as the ease of management. Not to mention, our internal IT Economist determined that the Zerto solution would provide the best ROI out of the competing solutions we analyzed. So far, his calculations have been spot on, and we have saved substantially

Reliability and Availability

Asigra8.8
Based on 5 answers
Over 6 consecutive years our Asigra Backend had 99.99% uptime and provided 7x24 data restore availability.
Software is robust in operations, provides N+1 node architecture to protect against failure of half of the nodes (majority of the nodes still up) and software based replication to protect against data loss across two geographically independent datacenter locations. Why not 10 points? Some major upgrades still require short downtime within a planned maintenance windows.

Online Training

Asigra1.0
Based on 1 answer
Anything training past level 1 and level 2 is a waste of time. They do not offer training, just an exam and require you to read 2500 pages of their documentation as their training. They are selling you something which you already have. Training exams are far fetched and cover topics hidden within the documentation. A lot of their documentation does not match across itself. They don't even follow the standard versions Major.Minor.ServicePack.Hotfix. They use the MAJOR.MAJOR.MAJOR.Hotfix method, which doesn't match their documentation. They require you to take training in order to keep your engaged hybrid partnership. If you ask me personally, their training is a scam to make more money.

Quick to install, easy to create jobs, schedules and retention policies. No large cycles of setting up backup volumes or trash volumes. Retention job itself configures the BLM functionality so you don't need an expertise to handle the BLM module separately.

Alternatives Considered

When evaluating Asigra against Commvault we found the following:Commvault - Expensive licensing, per socket, VM,
agent, TB etc. = > HW costs, pro
services = > TCOCommvault - Did not at the time backup Office 365, Google Apps,
Salesforce.com and could not be recovered locallyCommvault - Did not at the time Backup/Recover Docker Containers

We looked at both CommVault and NetBackup, which are similar platforms to that of the Zerto Replication Software stack. We thought the Zerto solution best met our specification needs, as well as our cost needs. The CommVault licensing was complicated, and we just have had a bad experience in the past with NetBackup.

Return on Investment

  • Excellent customer service - our engineers all have first-class knowledge of Asigra backup, which helps to enable us to be trusted advisers to our customers
  • Positive feedback from customers - we regularly receive positive feedback from our customers using the Asigra software, telling us how happy they are at being able to restore files so quickly, and spend less time on backup management
  • Trusted advisers - we've been in the backup market for over 12 years, and partnering with a well-known and well-respected organisation like Asigra helps to cement the trust with our customers

  • Zerto had an immediate positive ROI because we avoided having to spend the professional services to setup EMC recoverpoint, and the continuing premium of the EMC product and support for later years.
