Asigra

If implemented as a Cloud Service provider (Public Cloud), In House Solution (Private Cloud) or a mixture of both (Hybrid Cloud):
  • The Agentless Architecture means there are less support burdens.
  • Encryption at Source gives the customer confidence their data is secure.
  • WAN Optimisation (Compression & Block Level Incremential Forever and De-deupe of Data), enables a large amount of Data to be protected offsite.
  • One step Backup to both Local and Offsite storage enables LAN speed restores with offsite peace of mind.
  • Asigra Replication from DS-System to DS-System enables another geographically separate copy of the data.

Zerto Virtual Replication

If you have very large VMDKs (Virtual Machine Disk), failing snapshots or failing Microsoft VSS processes, then Zerto is the product.
If you have limited CPU or storage space or speed, Zerto is the answer.
If you need "nearly" instant RPO and very fast RTO, Zerto is the answer.
If you don't have the platform issues or are not concerned with RPO and RTO, and cost is a driver, then other products can have an advantage.

Pros

  • Asigra's agentless architecture means it's much less labour intensive than agent-based alternatives.
  • Encrypted at Source gives the customer and service provider the confidence that their data is secure.
  • Continuous Development of the Asigra product suite by Asigra's dedicated engineers in Toronto means Asigra continues to protect data in the latest IT environments. Be that in the Office, Mobile Device, Cloud or Data Centre.

  • Anyone with a large disk (VMDK) knows the issues of VMware snapshots. Most backup software is a "point in time backup" that uses snapshots. While the backup can be run multiple times per day the stress of the snapshot on the host and storage is eliminated by the continuous protection of Zerto log replication.
  • A client had a the disks on a VM go missing for some reason. We had them "flip the switch" for a real fail over and press the fail over button. The VM on our DR site started to come alive as the VM at the customer site was brought down. When the DR VM was fully up, automatic reverse replication started. The DR machine was available in a few minutes (to take into account different host hardware) for access. One the vm at both sites were in sync, we had the customer again repeat the fail over process and the DR site VM was turned off and the Production site VM was brought back on line. This was a 200 GB VM and the whole process was finished in about 3 hours.
  • Zerto also allows for "Test" fail overs that can be configured on many different functions, such as host, datastore, network and IP usage. Configuring the IPs is crucial to avoid inadvertent site cross contamination of the same VM.
  • Zerto can also retrieve files from any VM disk on the DR site without starting a VM. Very handy for retrieving files or directories.
  • Since Zerto is running continuous log replication, changes on the production VM are nearly instantaneously copied to the DR site. As with any data process, having sufficient bandwidth for "churn" peaks minimizes the delay in updating the DR site.

Cons

  • File Level restore from Windows Hyper-V VHDX backups. This functionality is possible in VMware VMDK backups.
  • DS-System GUI is outdated and needs bringing up to the same level as the new DS-User GUI.
  • The reporting could be slicker of the DS-System to DS-System Asigra Replication which provides a second Geographically separate copy of the data.

  • The price point and minimum license requirements would make it difficult for a smaller organization to adopt Zerto.
  • I'm trying to figure out how to integrate it with SQL, but currently, I've found other DR methods for SQL still work better.

Likelihood to Renew

From a business prospective, I am a service provider so I would always renew. From a technical prospective, there has been enough written about it in earlier questions and this could go endless.Overall, Asigra is a good organization to work with. They are concerned about what the partner and the customer needs and are always a phone call away to help in any situation. Therefore, apart from technology, you work with people always available to support their claims.

Zerto Virtual Replication9.5

We really like the easy setup of this replication solution, as well as the ease of management. Not to mention, our internal IT Economist determined that the Zerto solution would provide the best ROI out of the competing solutions we analyzed. So far, his calculations have been spot on, and we have saved substantially

As I have described in various earlier questions, Asigra provides a simple GUI, easy to configure and manage backup jobs, simple recovery interface and you don't need learning cycles to understand the product and its functionalities. It is more of an on-the-fly easy to use product.

Reliability and Availability

Asigra8.8
Based on 5 answers
At the front of Asigra availability is the N+1 capabilities of the DS-System. Multiple nodes that load balance and are fault tolerant giving the DS-System a robust availability offering. The N+1 can survive as long as 50% +1 of the nodes are running. Data availability is strong via Asigra's replication module. Both bidirectional and unidirectional replication for the DS-System exist. Bidirectional replication requires the MSP to purchase double the licensing. That cost is going to be passed on to the customer. Many MSP's opt for the unidirectional, which requires a manual switch over on the DS-License server to change a replication vault to a production vault. With that being said, Asigra replication is very efficient and allows for multiple, in-region and out-region backup vaults. The DS-System works best on Linux utilizing PostgreSQL for the backend database. Ideally, this should be clustered. Clustering a PostgreSQL database is not as straight forward as doing it with Microsoft. That adds some administrative overhead and requires some PostgreSQL expertise end users and MSP's have to find. The Windows DS-Client, the piece doing the backup, can be gridded for a multi-node backup cluster. Unfortunately, the Linux DS-Client cannot be gridded.

Online Training

Asigra1.0
Based on 1 answer
Anything training past level 1 and level 2 is a waste of time. They do not offer training, just an exam and require you to read 2500 pages of their documentation as their training. They are selling you something which you already have. Training exams are far fetched and cover topics hidden within the documentation. A lot of their documentation does not match across itself. They don't even follow the standard versions Major.Minor.ServicePack.Hotfix. They use the MAJOR.MAJOR.MAJOR.Hotfix method, which doesn't match their documentation. They require you to take training in order to keep your engaged hybrid partnership. If you ask me personally, their training is a scam to make more money.

Implementation

Quick to install, easy to create jobs, schedules and retention policies. No large cycles of setting up backup volumes or trash volumes. Retention job itself configures the BLM functionality so you don't need an expertise to handle the BLM module separately.

Alternatives Considered

Asigra licensing model is more straight forward than eVault and has an easier user interface.Asigra is more robust and feature rich than Mozy or Carbonite.Asigra offers true multi-tenancy, where the Symantec products do not offer such features.Asigra's feature stack holds water against the other competitors out there. As far as cloud backup goes, it is the most mature cloud backup software on the market. As well as being mature, the security exemplified by the NIST FIPS 140-2 encryption certification is far ahead of its competitors.

We started out using Backup Exec which was in service until we virtualized our environment where it didn't perform as well at the time. Then we switched to Veeam which worked well, but then as we started needing to do migrations and off-site DR, we found ourselves relying on Zerto more often.
