AspDotNetStorefront

If you need a tool to manage a website, this is a good place to start. If you aren't ready for something of this caliber it might not be meant for your business. It's a stepping stone and you need to be ready to learn and it may require a bit more attention.

Pros

  • Tons of reporting tools
  • Easy to navigate
  • Multiple user profiles

  • Episerver has a robust discount engine. This engine, combined with "visitor groups" allow our marketing department to categorize customers and offer a variety of discounts to targeted customers at specific times.
  • Episerver has a full-featured, storefront experience that can handle everything you might want for an e-commerce website.
  • Episerver offers A/B testing that can be helpful for trying out new content ideas and tracking the results.

Cons

  • Not everyone can navigate easily without training
  • Some reports can be fairly large and take lots of time to download
Donovan Farmer profile photo
  • Simpler import functionality (look at PIMcore/Akeneo for examples).
  • Break out of the very limiting page tree model. Look at Sitecore's use of placeholders to decouple content and presentation. Also more content types than just pages blocks and media.
  • More DAM integrations.
  • *well documented* web APIS to support headless.

The CMS has clearly had time to evolve as a tool but the digital commerce aspect is outdated and needs to be reviewed as it is not intuitive to the admins using it.

Fully understand what is OOTB feature of the platform before proceeding to develop. Then implement a customization of key features once you can prove they are working as OOTB to make them more user friendly and productive for the business. Eg pre order and e gift card

Alternatives Considered

More customization and ability to work with web designers make it an easy tool to manage projects and promote growth of your store front. It may not be as user friendly as others but it has more flexibility by far.

I did evaluate other products in addition to Episerver. The other finalist was Magento, which has a very robust cart and a large market share. I have used that platform in the past and overall had been happy with it's performance. I ultimately selected Episerver because it was .NET (versus PHP) and had very strong commerce and content components. Magento would have required an integration with another (second) platform to build out non-commerce content in the way that was necessary for the project's needs. Episerver had that out of the box. Plus Episerver's evolution and road map showed solid growth and innovation while at the same time Magento was well behind their plans to launch Magento 2.0 after already significant delays.

Return on Investment

  • Easy to use customer service tools
  • Invaluable reporting abilities
  • Tier users makes it easy to manage employees

  • Our rocky implementation was very costly to our organization
  • The untestable nature of epiCommerce has cost us a lot in development time and fragile integrations
  • The difficult database schema has cost us a great deal of development time for maintenance and new feature development
