Oracle ATG

I would say that Oracle ATG Web Commerce is most likely better suited for companies that have a wide selection of products online as well as a customer base that is robust enough to justify this software. We were managing several stores and so we needed this software to create an atmosphere of quick and efficient searching from customers as well as some sort of guidance for products that they would like based on their searches

Magento Commerce Cloud (formerly Magento)

Magento Commerce Cloud works great for us, an ecommerce company. Any other company (of decent size) should consider Magento. They offer many features right out of the box and allow a ton of customization as well as easy integration with third party vendors. I could imagine that if you were a smaller company, Magento would likely be overkill for your online store.

Pros

  • Easily customizable dashboards that are versatile and fit the needs of different departments within a company.
  • Search tool is unparalleled and provides multiple parameters for narrowing down your query in a jiffy.
  • Customer service is always available and can be accessed through both email and phone around the clock.

  • Magento Commerce Cloud allows us to develop our own custom solutions for problems that we need solved.
  • Magento Commerce Cloud can also be integrated with many of the third part vendors that we use. This has made many implementations go very smoothly and tends to be much quicker than developing our own custom solution.
  • There are many features available right out of the box. Many of them we have not implemented yet, but it is great to have them available to us when we are ready.

Cons

  • The schema design within ATG is poor. It does not follow accepted standards. For example, column naming is inconsistent and generalized, with multiple (unrelated) tables using column names like "ID" as primary/foreign keys. This is a barrier to an intuitive understanding of the schema. Out of the box, the schema is missing many important foreign key relationships. In fact, the publishing schema explicitly prohibits FK relationships, causing data inconsistencies when ATG's black-box algorithms fail. We've built an impressive arsenal of custom scripts specifically for handling the many exceptions and orphan conditions that arise from this design practice.
  • The job scheduler is poorly designed. It uses a database table to manage message queueing. The processes flows as follows: Messages are inserted into a table. Then, a scheduled process selects messages, applies them, updates the message row on success/failure, then goes back and looks for messages that are "complete" in order to delete them. It performs this in a serialized loop that is inefficient and heavy on database resources. There are far better ways for processing message queues than trying to leverage a database.

  • You will not be able to accomplish a Buy Two X and Get Y Free promotion. It is literally impossible. There are extensive articles on StackOverflow and elsewhere that state this, in addition to Magento's own site. You can Buy 2 of the same and Get Y (of yet again the same) free, but that is the extent of that ability. Creating other seemingly simple promotions can be very difficult as it was clearly built by developers for developers, not by developers for marketers/merchandisers. That leads to a lot of time being inefficiently spent testing these promotions instead of other more valuable work.
  • The amount of time it takes for some things to update is ridiculous in 2018, especially when there is a host of other software that do this way more efficiently and effectively. It can take over an hour after moving a few items around in the Visual Merchandiser. Really?
  • Support is severely lacking. There is no easy way to contact Magento to get support. I am not the account owner and I have no way to get easy support when I run into an issue. If our developer is very busy or away on vacation, I am stuck sifting through countless articles and navigating dev sites I'm not highly familiar with to get a seemingly simple answer.
  • Magento has made it painful to move away to another platform but equally as painful to stay. It's clunky, but it is powerful. There needs to be a balance for people like me (and most of my team) who are not developers but use it for hours on a daily basis.

Magento is well-supported by a big development team at eBay, which not only addresses bug reports very quickly, but also is constantly working on improvements to the platform. The wealth of Magento third party modules ensures that the platform will be up to date with future changes to
Payment or ERP systems.
Security is always a concern and with the Zend framework as a foundation, Magento has had very few security-related patches since I have started to work with it

Alternatives Considered

We're married to Oracle ATG Web Commerce for the time being, and have been users for about six years now. We are slowly moving auxiliary features out of ATG and into custom in house solutions that give us purpose built, more responsive, and more appropriate functionality. Eventually, ATG will serve only core features like catalog management and order processing. All other activities will be handled externally as microservices that we control, rather than relying on the black box of ATG.

I wasn't involved in the purchase of Magento but I have used Shopify and Woo Commerce in the past and they are, in my opinion, far easier to use. You can get started very quickly and set up your store without the need of a dedicated developer. If I were involved in the purchasing process (even if to just give an opinion), I would have not recommended going this route and would have preferred to manage it all in-house with our more limited resources and getting an easier-to-use platform instead

Return on Investment

  • We were able to drive sales for one of our clients up by 50% over the course of a 6 month window by revamping their online web store with Oracle ATG.
  • Sharing data and communication improved greatly between legal/finance and marketing.

  • Magento is great for fast paced initiatives.
  • Completely scalable even up to an enterprise level.
