Oracle ATG

I would say that Oracle ATG Web Commerce is most likely better suited for companies that have a wide selection of products online as well as a customer base that is robust enough to justify this software. We were managing several stores and so we needed this software to create an atmosphere of quick and efficient searching from customers as well as some sort of guidance for products that they would like based on their searches

SAP HANA

SAP HANA is well suited when performance is essential to the business process. HANA Live can replace the need for an external BI solution if the data comes from the ECC system (not external sources). The integration of AI frameworks, as well as the AFL, can provide a competitive advantage. Coding extension on HANA XSA is a perfect alternative for non-ABAP developers to swiftly provide solutions without the baggage that comes with the ABAP stack. For us, HANA seems less suited for unstructured data. We had to move all our GOS attachments from our legacy SQL server to a content server before we migrated to SAP HANA.

Pros

Oracle ATG

  • The product allows you to customize/personalize the eCommerce experience for each user.
  • It lets you load different catalogs and/or prices for different customers.
  • It allows sales staff to log in to their own accounts and "impersonate" a customer account to gain access to their order history, place an order on their behalf, etc.

SAP HANA

  • HANA has allowed us to convert our BW reports and provide users with real time report data. Prior to moving to HANA, the reporting was based on prior day activities.
  • Queries involving large amount of financial data are able to be run much quicker with HANA than prior to implementation.

Cons

Oracle ATG

  • The schema design within ATG is poor. It does not follow accepted standards. For example, column naming is inconsistent and generalized, with multiple (unrelated) tables using column names like "ID" as primary/foreign keys. This is a barrier to an intuitive understanding of the schema. Out of the box, the schema is missing many important foreign key relationships. In fact, the publishing schema explicitly prohibits FK relationships, causing data inconsistencies when ATG's black-box algorithms fail. We've built an impressive arsenal of custom scripts specifically for handling the many exceptions and orphan conditions that arise from this design practice.
  • The job scheduler is poorly designed. It uses a database table to manage message queueing. The processes flows as follows: Messages are inserted into a table. Then, a scheduled process selects messages, applies them, updates the message row on success/failure, then goes back and looks for messages that are "complete" in order to delete them. It performs this in a serialized loop that is inefficient and heavy on database resources. There are far better ways for processing message queues than trying to leverage a database.

SAP HANA

  • It would be good if we could virtualize all DBs even in production.
  • Hana dynamic tiering is not yet officially released with HA/DR. Furthermore, it sounds like not many companies have a great amount of experience with it, therefore I'm wondering if it is reliable.

At this moment we are not focusing on SAP, however would love to in the future. This is primarily because of our limited ability to generate more revenue to fund for SAP partnerships and products. Our initial tryst with SAP Partneredge open ecosystem didn't go as planned and we have shelved that for now. Hope we can revive in the future

The support portal is fairly easy to navigate and always available. Sometimes I can find what I need by just reading the documentation or SAP community blog posts. If I have to open a ticket I have always had good quality service and the issue was eventually resolved. The support could be improved by providing faster responses.

Alternatives Considered

Oracle ATG

Hibernate and JSF are both good, but for setting up and running an eCommerce system, you will need to start to build the site from scratch. ATG will allow a company to accomplish this task faster and it has a good and powerful framework to support the site.

SAP HANA

The first thing that is used to select between SAP HANA and S4HANA is the database that the client wants to use, this is one of the critical points. Also, the audit requirements are some other points to choose the correct option. Finally, the client needs to play a good role in that decision and how the change will impact the business (IT vs Business).

Return on Investment

Oracle ATG

  • We were able to drive sales for one of our clients up by 50% over the course of a 6 month window by revamping their online web store with Oracle ATG.
  • Sharing data and communication improved greatly between legal/finance and marketing.

SAP HANA

  • Data Analysts are able to complete their analysis much faster (4 hours vs 4 - 5 days)
  • Resource intensive summarization processes could be decommissioned as the data can be stored at the lowest grain. This saves on resource/licensing costs and gives the business near real-time access to their data.
