Authorize.Net
Authorize.Net is best for mid to large size companies that need to process large transactions and are worried about fraud or potential chargebacks. Small businesses are probably better off going with a different option since there are many less expensive options out there that offer very similar features for credit card processing.

I'm simply a user who receives reimbursements and can't speak to bill.com's effectiveness for admins, but bill.com seems perfectly fine for this medium-sized company's needs. I'm not sure why our company chose to use bill.com only for reimbursement payments (not submitting and approving the reimbursements) and only for US employees. We switched to bill.com after changing our external tax consultants in the US, so if your external tax consultant uses bill.com, it seems like an appropriate scenario to switch as well.

- There’s a lot to love about Authorize.Net. They provide a ton of free add-on features, including fraud prevention filters, a simple checkout system, subscription/recurring billing and customer information storage for shipping addresses and payment info so your customers won’t have to reenter it every time.
- They also provide e-check processing (even without a merchant account) for an extra fee.
- I also like that you can use the AuthNet virtual terminal with a USB card reader.

- Bill.com allows anyone who has the dedicated bill.com email address for the company to send bills directly to Bill.com. This means clients, vendors, automated bill reminders - all of those can be emailed directly to bill.com. There's no need for a "special portal" for these to go through - ANYONE can send them there. And, if you have something that you need to add that is on your desktop, great! Just drag and drop, and it's added. It makes getting the bills a very simple process.
- The approval process for Bill.com is great. You can set one or multiple approvers, you can customize it for just certain vendors need approval, or just amounts over a certain threshold, with a variety of combinations in between. This is really nice for clients who don't want to approve every bill they send you, but maybe they want to double check bills over $5,000.
- The variety of email preferences you can set up for Bill.com is amazing. You can set it so anytime you receive something new, you get an email. Or maybe every time there's an approved bill - you get an email. Maybe you only want updates once a week, or on certain days of the week - you can do that too! It's whatever you need to see to be the most efficient, Bill.com will notify you by email however you want them to. It's great because nothing slips through the cracks.

Cons
Authorize.Net
- Authorize.net's user interface is far below average and feels like it has not been updated since the early 2000s. It's difficult to find the needed tools. It takes a lot of training to get new users up to speed and using the platform. In general, Authorize.net is in need of a major site re-design.
- Authorize.net's Recurring Billing feature is unreliable. There is not a way to filter by time-frame (monthly, yearly, etc.) and canceling subscriptions is only possible one at a time. The platform would often duplicate customers instead of adding billing details to the already existing customer.
- Importing, exporting, and uploading content into Authorize.net is difficult. Content must be formatted in a very specific manner. Because of this, I do no recommend Athourize.net to anyone who has large amounts of data it wants to transfer to or from the platform.

- Cloud is a strength and a weakness - some customers prefer a personal on-site training resource.
- Integration to other systems can be limited - for instance, some AP systems integrate to Fixed Assets for automatic set up of new assets.
- When integrating back to GL systems, 1099 and other information can be difficult to map.
- Based on volume, the low per transaction fees can total more than on site software systems. But for low volume firms, cost is very nominal.

I continue to recommend Bill.com for businesses of various sizes, as the system of record for company disbursements for approval and control reasons. Best practices include using Expensify as the system of record for inputting expense reports, using Bill.com for reimbursement and approval of expense reports, vendor and contractor payables, and then syncing Bill.com with the accounting system, which is the master system of record. In this way, data entry is optimized, visibility and control are maximized and users are not burdened with having to access multiple systems to submit documents or process requests

Bill.com continues to raise the bar with new features and improved interface. The Fast Pay option is another innovation that reduces administrative time when you have to get an overnight check out. The new Chat Support interface, powered by Zopim, which is world-class, adds to the responsiveness of Bill.com's support team and makes getting real-time answers that much easier.

The only time Bill.com was ever "unavailable" was then the Sync to Quickbooks function failed. That happened a time or two but was usually quickly remedied. I'm not sure if that's an issue with newer online versions of Quickbooks Enterprise -- at the time we were using a remotely hosted Quickbooks instance accessed via terminal server (vs a cloud offering like Bill.com is)

On the rare occasions when we've reached out to support with questions, their responses are timely and fully answer the questions we have. The rating primarily reflects my satisfaction with how little I've had to contact support since implementing their system.

Authorize.net is often on the more complex end to implement (at least for custom implementations). Stripe and Braintree are somewhat more developer-friendly and also have more intuitive user interfaces (for management and day-to-day use). Some other services also have better price points - be sure to shop around. But, it has a longer history than some services and high support among third-party software, plugins and other solutions.

We are switching from Bill.com to Tipalti because it is able to handle everything Bill.com cannot and allows our company to quickly scale. Bill.com has had the opposite effect on our company. We could not continue to scale until we decided to stop using their service. It was either change payment systems or hire an accountant just to deal with the manual processes caused by Bill.com.

- Authorize.Net has really helped smooth out the payment process for our larger customers. They often have multiple accounts they need to pay for in one transaction and/or a high dollar amount to process.
- We have never had to deal with a chargeback from a transaction processed in Authorize.Net. We get chargebacks from our other platform a few times every month.

- Bill.com has absolutely had a positive ROI. It streamlines multiple processes and is easy to keep track of.
- Bill.com enables you to not have to organize and save invoices and payment receipts, because it is all organized on the platform with your scanned images and any other info you could use.
