Authy

If you're currently using something like Google Authenticator, and struggling with multi-device scenarios, Authy is a welcome relief. If you have a bigger list of accounts, a tool like 1Password might be more appropriate — although we haven't tried to move any 2FA accounts to it yet, it has much more robust tools for selective sharing of accounts between users, grouping and organizing, etc.

Duo Security

If you use applications or servers already supported by DUO Security. Its a no brainer. If you have routers or security appliances, or even applications that aren't supported then further investigation into implementation viability should be completed. It's always best to do your research first, followed by a real time test implementation before following through with purchasing DUO Security. This is particularly true for VPN Access. For local site or remote system access (via SSH or other protocols), DUO Security is one of the best solutions out there.

Pros

Authy

  • Device changes (desktop & mobile)
  • Consistent across platforms
  • Easy to use

Duo Security

  • The mobile app is spectacular. Very straightforward, easy to use, and the push notifications on a locked screen save so much time when it comes to authenticating.
  • Adding the tools that need to be added is as simple as scanning a QR code, which makes it a lot less complicated than competitors

Cons

Authy

  • Locating specific accounts once you've added more than a dozen or so can be a pain — a way to categorize or group them would be VERY welcome.
  • Couldn't find a simple way to kill a device from my list of Authy devices — i.e. my phone was grabbed and I want to revoke its ability to generate 2FA keys. It may be possible, but it wasn't easy to find in the relatively streamlined mobile interface.
  • Ongoing prompts for my backup password are understandable but strange, since canceling the prompt still allows me to use Authy.

Duo Security

  • Sometimes the app hangs and as a result, multiple requests are submitted and unless all the requests are approved, the user is not authenticated. This is an area of improvement.
  • The SLA/turnaround time has to be improved.

Usability

It really cannot get much easier. Simply sign in, verify the device and off you go. I have found Authy to be very easy and almost identical across all the devices I use. I am disappointed about the slow update process. Authy could use some updating, but I have not seen it yet.

I give Authy a 10 here simply because it has been so easy that I have not had to reach out to support, either Authy's or a vendor. It just works and is one less thing to worry about for 2FA. I have not lost access to a resource secured by 2FA since switching to Authy.

We haven't needed special support assistance but we did encounter some service issues on several occasions. But I can do say that on these cases Duo sends notifications and updates on the troubleshooting process.

Alternatives Considered

Authy

I used both Google Authenticator and Duo before switching to Authy. With both of them, I lost access to resources because I forgot to disconnect the device before moving/replacing it. That resulted in absolute hassles with having to reach out to the resource's support and filling out forms to prove my identity. Save yourself the hassle, just use Authy.

Duo Security

We looked at Okta, and Okta is a great solution, but much larger in scope than what we needed. When we start our journey to identify/access management we will definitely consider them.Microsoft was useful too, and minimal cost. It didn't seem to have as much support from other vendors, nor was as straightforward as Duo Security.

Return on Investment

Authy

  • Our users are more likely to use 2FA.
  • Less time lost reaching out to support if access is lost.
  • Easily access 2FA codes from multiple devices as the situation needs.

Duo Security

  • One of the negatives as mentioned previously is the app hangs once in a while and multiple requests are flooded to the user's mobile.
  • Push is effective and simplifies the usage.
