AutoCAD

AutoCAD is best If your work is related only to 2D drawings or Layouts like for Architecture application it is good for floor layouts. Since it is not limited to the workspace so any complex / Big drawing I can generate with the help of AutoCAD.Since I mentioned, It is not good for 3D geometries. For my application parametric support was required but it is not available with the software.

Pros

AutoCAD

  • The first thing I like about AutoCAD is that it has [a] very amazing and [self-explanatory] layout, which allows new users to learn swiftly. You don't have to [spend] minutes looking for the thing that you are looking for.
  • Another thing that I love about AutoCAD that you can work [in] great depths and details, like for me I have to work on engineering designs which require me to work as precisely and accurately as possible. I have to be very accurate in each [dimension] and curves because even a difference of a millimeter can cause disasters.
  • Another thing that I appreciate as an engineer using AutoCAD is its ability to calculate unknown dimensions automatically and I don't have to go to [the] field and measure these reading[s] manually and this means a lot to me as this saves me a lot of times and effort.

Cons

AutoCAD

  • It needs more help in 3D world, eventually some parametric support
  • Better connection with Revit or Inventor
  • Dynamic blocks could get some updates
  • Parameters can be more developed; excel capabilities could be added
  • Sheet set could be more evolved to support a workflow involving data management

Rhino 3D

  • Rhino has very limited sheet layout tools.
  • Grasshopper could be better integrated into the main interface.
  • Lack of backwards file compatibility can be frustrating.

Because rarely we [would] rather wait for a whole year to update, sometimes the new updates don't bring many new features and we are still ok with the current version. Also the change of interface is always something that takes time for every partner in the company to get comfortable with. So those are the main reasons we may want to keep the same version.

Is an extremely usefull and accurate software , yo certainly can do almost every task requiered to document a project drawings and specifications , the only is that to be confortable with it you need a little of practice and to be familiarized with the commands and the core functioning to get expected results.

I give this rating to truly reflect the utility of this tool as a weapon in the armory of every engineer who is out there to create something for generations to wow at. Being a civil engineer by education, I can appreciate the tool's complexity and utility which cannot be provided by any other tool in the market.

I think a lot of the time it is hard to find solutions to problems that come up online for both Rhino and plugins in for Rhino. McNeel doesn't seem to be very good at replying on forums with correct solutions or replying to more personal customer service issues that might come up.

the implementation was realy easy , to set up our workstation we pay for the licenses we are about to use , there was a little bit of delay to get the payment processed to receive the serial but after that the install runs without any problem , so you can fell secure there will be not issue with the implementation.

Alternatives Considered

AutoCAD

AutoCAD is the industry benchmark and standard, it is easy to use and understand, the Graphic User Interface is fairly intuitive with icons that make sense, shortcut keys make drawing super fast, blocks prevent or at least limit costly mistakes. The drawing exchange format (DXF) is for one thing easy to save in the newest format as well as older formats that better suit older machines in the profile cutting industry

Rhino 3D

Rhino3D was built to excel at modeling complex, freeform surfaces with excellent continuity of shape. Rhino3D's large community, robust plug-ins and generative modeling with Grasshopper make it unique. Rhino3D is very affordable providing excellent value for the financial investment. Creo and SOLIDWORKS also work with surfacing and this is sufficient for most product design but Rhino3D is preferred for this task when the shapes are overly complex.

Return on Investment

AutoCAD

  • As an educational institute there are no overall business objectives.
  • As a negative, the licensing is expensive and we have to limit the number of computers we put it on.
  • As a positive, many of our students will have a leg up when entering into programs or companies that use this software.

Rhino 3D

  • When compared to other paid and most used 3D software on the market, it is undoubtedly one of the cheapest.
