Avast CloudCare

Avast CloudCare is very competitively priced for a cloud-managed product. Its management console is excellent, easy to use, and easy to manage resources and policies. There is a good overview of all alerts and issues with clients, and it is easy to apply changes to multiple devices at the same time. It is also easy to split assets into groups and manage the group, whether it is just a specific policy or a particular setting or exception is needed.

Nmap

NMap is well suited to just about any situation, network size, or complexity. Some have brought up the point that NMap's proxy settings need work. I haven't used NMap with a proxy. NMap is my "go to" tool for a cursory security sweep. Once a problem is found, I can perform a deeper dive scan on a system or a network. I wouldn't, and don't, use NMap as my only security tool. No single tool has all the answers. For example, it is not a Wireshark in that it does not capture packets or analyze them. It is basically a port scanner, host discovery, OS detection tool.

Nmap

  • Nmap is great at finding live hosts on the network
  • Nmap is great for teaching new cyber specialist how network reconnaissance works
  • Nmap is built into every major recon tool on the market, it just works when it comes to scanning

Cons

Avast CloudCare

  • Below average protection
  • Unreasonably high system resource consumption.

Nmap

  • Maybe take some of the features of Zenmap and bake them in?
  • Include fancy extra graphical results charts or graphs or something to show people who you want to convey info too but have no idea what Nmap is actually doing.
  • I don't really think I'd change a lot actually.

The support at Avast CloudCare is excellent; the guys are professional and know their product very well. They have helped us (in the latter years of us using the product), on multiple occasions, especially when an upgrade goes wrong. Community support is not as high, but that is to be expected, as other products are much more popular and have much better adoption. All in all, although being an average Antivirus solution, the management console is excellent, and the support the company offers is excellent too.

There is a very large support community and a robust selection of add-ons and scripts. Once you get the use down this is one of the most powerful tools and you can find anything you are looking for as far as examples on the web. While not having official support its not lacking by any means.

Alternatives Considered

Avast CloudCare

When the product was initially deployed in our organization, it was a stable, dependable, and easy to use Antivirus protection. However, the newer versions, under Avast CloudCare management, had significantly reduced the detection rates, turning it into not as great a product as it once was. This lead me to look into alternatives, and eventually, we decided to replace the product with Sophos Intercept X, with EDR. It is a much more expensive product; however, the features are much better, and the added functionality of, for example, web filtering saves costs elsewhere, so works out only a bit more expensive.

Nmap

NMap usually lacks the features of the other network scanners, but for a good reason: most of the other network scanners out there are using NMap as part of their system. The nature of NMap (being open-source) is that it is available for use in other applications; as a result, these other applications make use of the NMap source code.

Return on Investment

Avast CloudCare

  • Below average protection.
  • On the flip-side it is cheap.

Nmap

  • Positive return as it's open-source (free) on all OS's.
  • If a person is not used of the command line there are a ton of front ends that make it point-and-click so the learning curve is good. That cuts down on time and manpower.
