Avatier is very well suited for large organizations that struggle with Service Desk getting swamped with password resets or unlocks. Giving end users the power to self service their issues is well worth the investment. In my environment, I even created Slackbot responses that triggered the Avatier site when a user said "reset password" or "locked out."

If you have an environment where there is heavy changes being made to your AD, then this is a great tool to have. Now, if your environment is being managed by one person and has very little change activity, then I would stick with searching the windows log files.

Cons

The only issue I have come across is that if a user begins to reset their password, but doesn't remember all of their security questions, sometimes the tool triggers a reset even if they didn't successfully reset themselves. This becomes a problem in an environment that has password complexity requirements, such as not being able to change your password again within a 24 hour period.

Alternatives Considered

We use NetIQ DRA, so we looked into Identity Manager as well, but it just didn't have the same kind of integration capabilities and security measures that Avatier provided. Ultimately, after using a trial of Identity Manager, we decided it wasn't going to work and opted for Avatier, as it had a long-standing record for excellence.

Varonis did a good job compared to the same things that StealthIntercept does. When it comes to configuring the reports within StealthIntercept, the configuration portion is easier. However, the web console in Varonis looked better and is a bit easier to navigate.
