AWS Backup

There is a cost involved with data retrieval. AWS Backup is truly that, a backup. If you need to access this data on a regular basis, there are better options out there. For long term, just in case incremental backups, AWS [Backup] checks all the boxes. Just set it up, start your backups, and rest assured your data is safe.

Veeam ONE

Veeam One works great for monitoring virtual infrastructure. However, other dedicated server monitoring apps do better with monitoring the individual VMs. Where it stands out is its reporting functionality, which allows you to forecast growth and keep track of how you are using your resources. It is also great for companies without a big monitoring budget, as there is a pretty functional free version.

Cons

AWS Backup

  • Not so easy to use
  • A little pricey
  • The backup is in the cloud; make sure to keep an offline backup (the problem of all of this kind of solution)

Veeam ONE

  • The licensing is tricky to understand. You can have an enterprise BR license or a Veeam ONE license, and the split modules read from only one module where the license is actually loaded into it.
  • Documentation could be a little better.
  • It's not exactly pretty to look at. Themes and tweaks are pretty limited.

Support Rating

Support for AWS Backup is by Amazon itself so it is solid as always. If you have a business or higher level support plan you'll have no trouble getting engineers or other staff on the job to help you with whatever comes up.

We rarely if ever call support, but overall Veeam is very responsive, quick to get a hold of, and knowledgeable in there help. Some companies get big like Veeam and their support drops off, but we haven't seen that with Veeam (but again, their products seem really solid and trouble free so we rarely need help).

Alternatives Considered

AWS Backup

Being an AWS service, AWS Backup integrates in a native way with other AWS services, providing an easy way to backup those services. Being able to create separate backup plans that meet specific business and regulatory compliance requirements provides us with capabilities to face auditing processes.

Veeam ONE

Veeam ONE is SO much easier to use than anything in the SolarWinds and VROPS suite of products. A single interface with simple vCenter connectivity and you are up and running. There aren't a whole host of servers and applications that you need to set up and manage just to run Veeam ONE...it's a single server that gathers vCenter performance logs and that's about it, but the power of visibility and reporting that it offers is amazing.

Return on Investment

AWS Backup

  • Being able to offer live hot storage in the cloud for production environments allows me to get more people in the creative space with vast demand for speed.
  • Great integration with all my hardware, firewall and backup software was great.
  • Being able to network path my files like a native drive to my computer from the cloud made the designer not complain so much able learning new stuff.

Veeam ONE

  • Veeam ONE warned us of overuse of vSphere machines and recommended virtual server moves, thereby allowing us to maximize our hardware efficiency.
  • Veeam ONE could be a little irritating when its recommendations would continue to reverse due to slight changes on borderline systems.
