AWS IoT Core

AWS IoT Core provides a good solution for IoT services required for IoT application development and for IoT startup companies. AWS IoT platform provides special packages for IoT startups, helps them in lowering costs, and caters to all their educational and training needs. AWS IoT platform is integrated with powerful AI and ML analytics so IoT startups can focus more on device development and less on backend solutions. I don't see any scenario where the IoT Core would be less appropriate.

Azure App Service

If you are a large organization where you have a lot of traffics, Azure is good for you. If your scenario is something like, you sometimes have high traffic, and sometimes low traffic, and you got enough money, Azure is good for scaling up to your need. Azure is definitely not for you if your budget is low. Not suitable for low budget people AT ALL.

Pros

AWS IoT Core

  • Makes it easy to use other Amazon services like Lambda and S3
  • Regular updates bring new features to the platform
  • It is exceptionally well documented

Azure App Service

  • It has options to deploy using CI/CD.
  • It has great integration with Azure Devops
  • It has all the common runtimes, so we don't need to install softwares.

Cons

AWS IoT Core

  • At very early stages it might be difficult to understand the AWS IoT console.
  • It takes time to understand the concepts.

Azure App Service

  • Jumps between resource sizes can get expensive
  • You may wind up putting a lot of eggs in one basket--not necessarily a con but something to keep in mind (most of your data will likely be managed and processed through Microsoft products/services if you fully commit to Azure App Service).
  • Learning new technology. If you're moving from on-premises to Azure App Service (or any cloud solutions), you'll likely have to rethink how things are done to achieve the same end results (and/or resources may become expensive quickly).

Easy to use. That's the main goal and this nails it. From the user perspective, this is as intuitive as you would expect from an Amazon product. Easily connect and host without a bunch of training and hand-holding. Change management is always part of the process but this was about as smooth as I have seen.

Of course it saves our company resources and time and to the tedious job of sending our device data to Cloud server. Lots of devices communicate with Cloud using the single tool AWS IoT.

I give the Azure App Service support an 8 instead of a 10 because there are time when it is easier to google a problem and find an answer than it is to use the learning library to find an answer. I would say the universe of user group members willing to offer suggestions is amazing.

Alternatives Considered

AWS IoT Core

AWS IoT Core is faster, easier, cheaper, and enjoyed by our employees more than Microsoft Azure. We selected AWS IoT because we saw an advertisement for it and have used it ever since. We will continue to use it as long as it is around or until we find one that is better.

Azure App Service

Azure App Service will give you a very solid and strong platform to deploy your applications. It gives you great interfaces to manage those applications either through a Web Portal or the Azure command-line interface. However, I consider Azure overall to be very complex and hard for newcomers to use it right away. I would consider Heroku first due to its extremely simple interface and abstraction of computing units.

Return on Investment

AWS IoT Core

  • AWS IoT Core has lowered the cost of device development and data management.
  • Data analytics have become easy with power AI and ML algorithms.
  • Overall, the platform is highly secure so data security is not an issue now.

Azure App Service

  • It's difficult to find the right APP because one software has number of apps so there's no way to find the official version of an app, so sometimes we need to install APP then find out which is performing well.
  • Little expensive.
