I can say it is appropriate in many ways, like the data transfer and the migration part. The generations in the AWS snow family are also helpful in choosing the right one based on the amount of data and budget aspects. Moreover, it was well suited for use in migrating bulk amounts of data. The surveillance part is a bit drawback for us, and now its ok, and we are good with it.

IBM Cloudability has been important to how we manage budget data at the [...]. It has allowed for us to share budget data with other Directors who may not understand the intricacies of Budget Management. However, it only allows for data to be seen at a certain point in time, so for live data it would not be the best option.

  • It shows the visibility into the cost and a single pane of glass for all of our cloud providers, multiple products in those multi-cloud. So it shows us our spending across the cloud by vendor, by product, and by all the tags that we have in the cloud. So it gives us visibility into many different directions in our cost.

  • There is currently no ability to apply global filters over the data in cloudability. Rather users must go through a difficult process to create custom views which they are later able to apply over top of their datasets.
  • Drill functionality does not really exists but appears to be more of an after though add-on. Yes you are able to "drill" but the visuals disappear and even the ability to export the more detailed information.

We decided to build our own home-grown FinOps tool, but the results of the proof of concept were very promising.

In terms of setting up the Apptio Cloud ability and configuring the Cloud Subscriptions and Accounts its very much clearly defined and also in terms of the User interface its very rich in terms of the navigation and look and feel factors its cool.

Training was adequate, but the real learning begins when you start using the product, like most things. All major functions were covered so as an entry point, was a good introduction to the product. The training pace was good as well, the areas were covered in decent depth, without being too much of an information overload.

Actually, we have used both the AWS Database Migration Service and AWS snow family's snowmobile, and we have a lot of experience with both migration parts. But the one we choose the best is the AWS snow family. Among these, it really works like something to migrate all the existing data to AWS servers in a very short span. Moreover, the accuracy of the data transfer is 100%.

I have used CloudHealth, CloudCheckr (since acquired by Spot) and Pileus (now Anodot) are prior companies. CloudHealth is really the only tool that compares well with Apptio Cloudability. CloudCheckr has a very clunky UI and is totally absent of Business Mapping features. Anodot has a good UI, but it feels too similar to Cost Explorer and is missing many of the modules that make Apptio Cloudability and CloudHealth easy to use out of the box. Areas where Apptio Cloudability exceeds:
  • Business Mappings & Metrics
  • Dashboards
  • Cost reporting (CloudHealth doesn't always match invoicing)
  • Cost Reporting
API Areas where CloudHealth exceeds:
  • Asset reporting
  • Subscriptions + Alerts
  • Cost reallocation (not necessarily best in class)
Areas where both add value vs. native tools:
  • RI/SP recommendation
