Axiom EPM

Axiom is ideal for organizations with multiple departments that need to collect, share, and integrate data from common internal data sources. The product is best for very large organizations with a lot of financial backing. I wouldn't suggest using Axiom if you're a small organization or only one department, for example.

Tableau Desktop

Great for visualizing basic and complex analytics, can be very useful in a myriad of situations, for example it can be summarized up for grand views for executives and plenty of drill down opportunities for more analyst level staff. This allows the staff to performing the analytics to save time by not having to duplicate reports on different levels for different staff.

Pros

Axiom EPM

  • Compared to a previous EPM we used, Axiom's template load and saving performance has been much better even for large plan files.
  • Axiom consultants can create completely customized reports for any of the collected data. Super users within your organization can then fairly easily modify their work to create additional reports without Axiom's help (and invoices)
  • Setting up user security is a fairly easy one-time task and very easy to maintain when people change departments, leave the organization, etc. I would recommend you use role-based security settings.
  • Compared to our previous EPM, Axiom allows more customization and possibilities for templates. There's very few "the product can't do that" statements.

Tableau Desktop

  • With Tableau you do not need to have technical knowledge to do the data integration and you get a quick response of what you are looking for, being your visualization of high quality.
  • We can say that it is free software and it is not a limited version

Cons

Axiom EPM

  • Unfortunately, Axiom only assigned two implementation consultants to our massive project and both were completely new to the product and inexperienced.
  • This isn't really a fault of Axiom, but your organization's data has to be perfect before implementing Axiom. You need a strong project manager within your organization to take the lead in working with Axiom. They should be very familiar with the source data and what's important to all your internal stakeholders. The Axiom team needs to be clearly told exactly what you need from them.
  • We never truly felt confident anyone from Axiom was really familiar with the source tables and data being used. I would suggest in any project they make that a priority early on. Not being familiar with the data caused a list of issues regarding reporting and template construction.

Tableau Desktop

  • Tableau is ill-suited to work with SSAS cubes, at least when you are used to analysis within Microsoft tools
  • Data preparation is not up-to-par with other leading vendor tools (although can be improved through Alteryx if you have access to it)
  • The ease-of-use is true for basic analysis, but rapidly gives way to a steep learning curve with more complex queries or when the business context is more mathematics oriented

Because right now its the best option out there (disclosure: I haven't used Qlikview or some of the other direct competitors of Tableau). The big investment is in Tableau Server not desktop. For the cost of the license of Tableau desktop, its a pretty good deal. You can hook it up to pretty much any data source easily. You can easily share the visualizations with your team/colleagues easily. Tableau Desktop is generally easy to use for business users. But the more advanced stuff is better suited for a analyst or someone with a IT/CS background.

I am really a fan of tableau for its quick setup, data connection, dashboard creation time and very easy to use UI.As i have used multiple Bi tools like QlikView and SAP BO, i can say all other tools take really long time in performing above functionalities except QlikView which is really fast in term of performing analysis.

When used as a stand-alone tool, Tableau Desktop has unlimited uptime, which is always nice. When used in conjunction with Tableau Server, this tool has as much uptime as your server admins are willing to give it. All in all, I've never had an issue with Tableau's availability.

Tableau's connections to third-party sources can be somewhat slow due to the time required to speak to a source over a network. However, if you properly utilize Tableau's Data Source Extracts, then the speed is incredible. On the other hand, Tableau makes it very easy for the user to put too much data into one dashboard, which can impact performance. All in all, if you use the tool properly, speed should not be a concern.

For the scale of our implementation, Axiom only assigned two consultants who were both completely new to the company. It felt like we were all learning about the product together, when you would expect them to already be experts at their own product. The team also made a good bit of mistakes throughout production and go-live, which then caused more work internally for us. The team lead for our project also just left the company, so we'll see how next year's planning goes

I still haven't found something that stumped me for long. The company materials are first-rate and their seems to be a natural affinity among the professionals using the product. It seems there are many who want to help those that are following them onto the platform. I've never noticed any condescension to new users or obvious questions in the forums or my personal exchanges.

It is admittedly hard to train a group of people with disparate levels of ability coming in, but the software is so easy to use that this is not a huge problem; anyone who can follow simple instructions can catch up pretty quickly.

Time needs to be spent ahead of implementation to make sure data sources are set up and ready. Consultants need to understand the data sources and the goals before setting foot on-site. Installation is easy, learning to use it takes time. The training resources available are great.

Alternatives Considered

Vena was a strong product, but only our department within the University used it for budgeting. The entire university chose Axiom for the increased scale and capacity. The loading and saving performance of Axiom is slightly better than Vena. Also, Axiom provides more template and report customization. Vena definitely excelled more in their support and staffing and was much cheaper (so I'm told) than Axiom

My current work environment uses both Tableau Online, MicroStrategy & SSRS in parallel. Tableau is much closer to the SSRS in terms of visualization tool where as MicroStrategy is an enterprise data modeling and reporting tool.Based on the use case we use different tools. Here are the pros & consProsi) Suits perfectly for SQL Environment( not big data). We have created the maximum of our dashboard against SQL Server Database. They are perfectly designed, fast while retrieving data, and has very efficient online manipulation. ii) I prefer using Tableau Online if I want to drill down. iii) Unlike MicroStrategy we don't have to create attributes and facts inside the tool. Tableau just sits a extra layer on top of my data model and inherits all objects inside the tool. iv) Unlike SSRS Tableau Online helps us to create on the fly calculations in the web browser. So no manipulation is needed every time in the dataset v) Good Customer Support unlike MicroStrategy (In MicroStrategy cases are opened for weeks but no proper resolutions are made by experts).Consi) Report Scheduling Options are not the best in Tableau. If we see new a requirement of a report with email distribution, mobile distribution we don't prefer Tableau ii) Big Data (Hadoop) Live Interactions are slow. You need a special approach and extra implementation using middleware to make data retrieval fasteriii) Architect mode is not available

Although tableau is highly interactive and fast but with very large dataset its performance degrades heavily. So up to certain extent its really good but after that we have to take care of its performance issues.

Return on Investment

Axiom EPM

  • This is only the first year of implementation for the university, so the ROI is yet to be fully seen. For our department, which is the largest in the university, I think the ROI has been fairly high as our users have had more built-in resources within their plan files than they had previously.

  • Tableau has provided my clients with the information necessary to allocate multi-million dollar research budgets effectively, ensuring the company is getting the most bang for its buck.
  • Tableau has given my office the ability to present data quickly and easily in a professional format that customers can understand, and has them returning frequently for additional analysis and projects.
