Axiom EPM
Axiom is ideal for organizations with multiple departments that need to collect, share, and integrate data from common internal data sources. The product is best for very large organizations with a lot of financial backing. I wouldn't suggest using Axiom if you're a small organization or only one department, for example.

Tableau Public is great, especially if you're new to the platform or considering implementing it within an organization. The Public version has most of the capabilities of the full version, with extensive community documentation to troubleshoot issues you may run into. Additionally, there are many resources to check out Public workbooks from other users and communities: a GREAT learning resource to figure out new, innovative ways to visualize and present data. It is perfect for evaluating public datasets, for doing exploratory data analysis, or contributing to cross-organizational or extracurricular projects that may benefit from more sophisticated data analysis and exploration. Tableau Public, because it stores to the cloud and has limitations on connectivity (ie, cannot connect to SQL servers) is not suited for confidential, financial, PII, etc., data, and care should be taken to avoid including sensitive data in any of the Tableau Public workbooks used by an individual or organization.

Pros
Axiom EPM
- Compared to a previous EPM we used, Axiom's template load and saving performance has been much better even for large plan files.
- Axiom consultants can create completely customized reports for any of the collected data. Super users within your organization can then fairly easily modify their work to create additional reports without Axiom's help (and invoices)
- Setting up user security is a fairly easy one-time task and very easy to maintain when people change departments, leave the organization, etc. I would recommend you use role-based security settings.
- Compared to our previous EPM, Axiom allows more customization and possibilities for templates. There's very few "the product can't do that" statements.

- Tableau Public offers free tools for creative people to learn the products with minimal investment "up front", as well as providing a place to share data visualizations and insights with the world. Visualizations are hosted (for no charge) by Tableau Software and may be accessed by members of the local community (via links from an organization's website) or from anywhere in the world. Workbook(s) published to Tableau Public may be downloaded by viewers to see techniques used by the creator, and get good ideas.
- Tableau Public Premium is similar but removes the download functionality. This works well when the publisher wants to share access to the visualizations (e.g. on the organization's website) but NOT share the underlying workbooks nor data, keeping both confidential.

Cons
Axiom EPM
- Unfortunately, Axiom only assigned two implementation consultants to our massive project and both were completely new to the product and inexperienced.
- This isn't really a fault of Axiom, but your organization's data has to be perfect before implementing Axiom. You need a strong project manager within your organization to take the lead in working with Axiom. They should be very familiar with the source data and what's important to all your internal stakeholders. The Axiom team needs to be clearly told exactly what you need from them.
- We never truly felt confident anyone from Axiom was really familiar with the source tables and data being used. I would suggest in any project they make that a priority early on. Not being familiar with the data caused a list of issues regarding reporting and template construction.

- Must have a professional subscription to share with your network

It's free, right? I'll keep using the free version. So the real question to ask is this? Will I pay $999 for the Personal version or $1,999 for the Professional? Yikes! That is a big stretch. I'm not sure about that. The product comparison chart is at: http://www.tableausoftware.com/public/comparison

For the scale of our implementation, Axiom only assigned two consultants who were both completely new to the company. It felt like we were all learning about the product together, when you would expect them to already be experts at their own product. The team also made a good bit of mistakes throughout production and go-live, which then caused more work internally for us. The team lead for our project also just left the company, so we'll see how next year's planning goes

I haven't needed any technical support, so I toyed with the idea of rating this 10, since it is well designed, and there are sufficient videos on their site to help me learn it.

Vena was a strong product, but only our department within the University used it for budgeting. The entire university chose Axiom for the increased scale and capacity. The loading and saving performance of Axiom is slightly better than Vena. Also, Axiom provides more template and report customization. Vena definitely excelled more in their support and staffing and was much cheaper (so I'm told) than Axiom

Tableau Public provides a variety of visualization and point-and-click functionality, with little or no scripting, gives Tableau the advantage. Also, being lightweight, Tableau Public finds the ease of use from our PSU bank-clients that use low-end hardware and devices. Tableau public helps raise satisfaction index, by way of ease of use and beautiful visualizations.

- This is only the first year of implementation for the university, so the ROI is yet to be fully seen. For our department, which is the largest in the university, I think the ROI has been fairly high as our users have had more built-in resources within their plan files than they had previously.

- Quick visualizations.
- Clean design. If you are a fan of Edward Tufte or Stephen Few, then you favor a lean, clean look. That seems to be Tableau's default. I appreciate that.
