Axosoft

I would mark Axosoft on seven as a whole as the process it has is helping and working well for our department, and we are managing the software releases with it without any significant issues. Work processes and email tagging is working as expected, and teams are being updated with the results and findings accordingly, so none of the sprints are ending in the dustbin.

Azure DevOps Services

Azure DevOps is an excellent option for companies looking to streamline their development pipeline and code repository. It is highly collaborative and extremely easy to use. Our company is also using it within our IT Operations department to track infrastructure related work efforts as well and it has been very successful for that as well. Smaller companies may be able to use GitHub and other cheaper solutions for this type of work.

  • Fast Data Entry: AZDO was designed to facilitate quick data entry to capture work items quickly, while still enabling detailed capture of acceptance criteria and item properties.
  • Excel Integration: AZDO stands out for its integration with MS Excel, which enables quick updates for bulk items.

Cons

Axosoft

  • Timing Out - when editing a story or bug, occasionally Axosoft will time out and all changes will be lost
  • Viewing past sprints can be hard to locate
  • Multiple users within a Story - Axosoft could do a better job managing multiple users on the same story
  • User Interface isn't entirely user friendly and looks a bit outdated

Azure DevOps Services

  • Column sorting when in filtered states.
  • A way to show cross-team dependencies.
  • A customized "From" field for notifications. Sometimes when a mail comes from Azure DevOps the teams do not realize that I am sending it
  • A way to do online poker that doesn't require a plug-in.

I don't think our organization will stray from using VSTS/TFS as we are now looking to upgrade to the 2012 version. Since our business is software development and we want to meet the requirements of CMMI to deliver consistent and high quality software, this SDLC management tool is here to stay. In addition, our company uses a lot of Microsoft products, such as Office 365, Asp.net, etc, and since VSTS/TFS has proved itself invaluable to our own processes and is within the Microsoft family of products, we will continue to use VSTS/TFS for a long, long time.

Once you get the hang of Axosoft, I think it's easy to use however... getting the hang of it takes quite a bit of time. Additionally, once Axosoft makes an update, it can be difficult to find your bearings again. Like I said, once you know how to use the product, I think it's easy but it takes a bit to become comfortable and confident with Axosoft

Azure DevOps is a powerful, complex cloud application. As such there are a number of things it does great and something where there is room for improvement. One of those areas would be in usability. In my opinion it relies too much on search. There is no easy way to view all projects or to group them in a logical way. You need to search for everything.

Mostly the admins work on the issues, but most of the users face such issues and errors which get fixed after a login/logout, but this causes a change in the faith for the product in a user's mind. Overall the product can be marked at a good level of usage as our teams are making additions to it and getting the required work out of it.

When we've had issues, both Microsoft support and the user community have been very responsive. DevOps has an active developer community and frankly, you can find most of your questions already asked and answered there. Microsoft also does a better job than most software vendors I've worked with creating detailed and frequently updated documentation.

I actually like JIRA better, to me the UI is a lot cleaner. Easier to use, and search tickets.

For the last 4- 5 years I have only used VS. We can't imagine switching to another product. It is secure, reliable, intuitive, and easy to use. If we need to add compatibility of other language with this, then we need to simply add the Plugin and use it .

Return on Investment

Axosoft

  • Allowed us to create an agile and flexible process that we can easily change when trying new things

  • Bug tracking with priorities helps use track and fix urgent issues quickly and effectively.

Azure DevOps Services

  • When I first VSTS it was with a team of developers who always work on their own. This project was the first one at the company that used six developers all work on the same product at the same time. Integrating someone else code into the system was an unknown entity. VSTS really helped move this new collaboration forward. The staff who were on this team then moved on work together on other teams because they knew how to handle this type of work.
  • The learning curve on VSTS is quite large so make sure you have some of your best starting anew VSTS project. They will fail a few times but after a few mistakes they will get how to do things and your build, tests and deployments will all be automated.
  • The user integration into VSTS is very good. As long as you developers can use Team Foundation Server source control, either Microsoft's or git, then they already have the permission to have VSTS access source control. This is very good.
