If the organization has current or planned investment in Microsoft (i.e. Windows devices for people, is an Office 365 customer, etc), Azure Active Directory is a no brainer and the basic functionality is included in the base plans and licenses. If the organization needs a deeper level of identity management and/or has a high volume of object turn over (account provisioning and deletion), the limit of the basic functionality in Azure Active Directory is quickly realized and additional effort, expense, and technology may be required.

SAP Customer Data Cloud

Gigya is a good product overall. It's great for going from "non-social" to 'highly-social" very rapidly. But as needs become more complex over time, the value starts to decrease a bit.

Pros

  • AAD is super easy to set up! One thing I was nervous about was deployment. However, after reading the setup instructions, I was pleased to find this a very simple process and well detailed in the instructions.
  • AAD works! It simply does it's job. I have not had to monitor it, troubleshoot it, nor reinstall or tinker with it in any way. Making changes is very quick and easy also allowing you to quickly modify how the sync occurs, whether one-direction from your server to Azure only, or bi-directional where it will sync both ways, or only from Azure to your local AD. You have the options and the control to make it work for your environment!
  • AAD has a ton of tools, logs, data that combined provides a great look into what your users are doing, how it is being done and if any error exist it will provide very useful information about it so that you can resolve the matter.

  • Gigya provide a range of flexible APIs which support the development of bespoke engagement tools. They also provide out of the box engagement tools like comments and reactions.
  • Gigya's identity query tool makes it straightforward for users to query the user database using straightforward SQL queries.
  • Gigya's cloud storage is a safe and secure alternative to self-hosted databases.

  • In my opinion, Azure Active Directory's dashboard pages are way too busy and difficult to navigate.
  • Azure Active Directory doesn't handle duplicate attributes in user accounts very well.
  • Azure Active Directory pesters the admin to buy additional features by cluttering up the GUI with "suggestions" that you can't remove from the dashboard.

  • Nothing obvious. Some editors and traffickers want a more detailed analytics package. Gigya reports are pretty basic. There is a strong need for more advanced analytics and automated reports.
  • We have talked to Gigya about it, and they are working on it.

Admin panel is very clean and effective and manageable. Can't say enough good things about the UI. It's easy to use and enables to configure embeddable widgets by simply copying and pasting Java Script examples.

There are some latency issues. The 24 hour caching problem mentioned earlier is a problem. Sometimes the Gigya system makes two calls instead of a single call if we go directly to the social platform. For this reason, it's sometimes more efficient to go direct rather than use Gigya.

AAD is a great product that works seamlessly and is reliable as an actual domain controller on-premise. I have never had to call Microsoft as I have never had any issues. The sync client is being updated regularly, and apart from a persistent bug/feature that it shuts down at 01:00, I cannot really complain.

Fantastic support team. Very proactive. Not only do they answer questions in a timely manner, but they proactively show us whats coming in next releases. I can also share what I would like to see. They are very honest about what they can do, and what is not likely to be on the roadmap.
I never get any push-back from them about the hours of support. They are always willing to help.
They are also great about suggesting best practices that we might not have thought about. In other words, "Have you thought about doing it this way...".

We never evaluate other types of products. Since Windows 2000 we have been using Active Directory for the administration and management of our users, devices, and policies. We could certainly see the advances that are produced version by version and I firmly believe that Azure AD is the correct evolution and the way forward. It simplifies our work and manages our structure efficiently and clearly.

The three names that we were given to evaluate against Gigya by our tiger team were Bitium, OneLogin, and Janrain. The last one was just too new to the game, so after a brief review, we passed. We moderately considered Bitium, but OneLogin seemed to win against them more than they lost. In the end, it came down to Gigya versus OneLogin, and we decided to go with Gigya because of the overwhelming reviews of the outstanding customer service.

  • With several pricing tiers provided by Microsoft, it's easy to find the right solution for you and to ensure you're not overpaying for features you do not need.
  • The analysis and reporting tools in Azure AD exist, but are a bit limited, which could have a negative impact on larger companies looking to closely monitor their user's activity.
  • Overall, Azure Active Directory has saved us time and resources when creating and managing new employee accounts.
