Azure App Service

If you are developing an application in .NET with Azure DevOps included with CI/CD deploying on Azure App Service is the best solution. It is very easy to integrate with Azure DevOps (compared to ESB of Amazon Web Services). It will scale up your web servers based on load and requests. In some case when you are just creating a web page it is not necessary to use it. You might use Azure storage instead that is cheaper.

I run five websites off of 1&1 for different outshoots of the company. For our web needs it works perfectly. We have a midgrade hosting package and it works perfectly. I know if issues arose from traffic or storage space 1&1 would have a solution for us.

Pros

Azure App Service

  • It has options to deploy using CI/CD.
  • It has great integration with Azure Devops
  • It has all the common runtimes, so we don't need to install softwares.

  • Private registration: 1&1 offers free private registration which makes them an automatic favorite.
  • Reliable customer service: always someone available when I call in and I have never had my issue not get resolved.
  • Easy to use dashboard: domains in one place with DNS settings and other things that can be tweaked. It's easy to add an SSL certificate to domains as well.

Cons

Azure App Service

  • Jumps between resource sizes can get expensive
  • You may wind up putting a lot of eggs in one basket--not necessarily a con but something to keep in mind (most of your data will likely be managed and processed through Microsoft products/services if you fully commit to Azure App Service).
  • Learning new technology. If you're moving from on-premises to Azure App Service (or any cloud solutions), you'll likely have to rethink how things are done to achieve the same end results (and/or resources may become expensive quickly).

  • 1&1 offers a lot of a cart services. They could do a better job at integrating services that are purchased separately from each other.

Support Rating

Azure App Service

Azure App Service 9.4
Based on 7 answers
I give the Azure App Service support an 8 instead of a 10 because there are time when it is easier to google a problem and find an answer than it is to use the learning library to find an answer. I would say the universe of user group members willing to offer suggestions is amazing.

Alternatives Considered

Azure App Service

Azure has many data center, their services are more reliable. Azure has way more features than both Linode and DigitalOcean. If someone wants a complete reliable service, he/she must go to Azure instead of Linode and DigitalOcean because even though azure charges more, it is worth the money you pay there.

Rackspace I find to be too pricey for the service they offer. Pagely is very much WordPress oriented. I've had downtime with both that I haven't experienced with 1&1.

Return on Investment

Azure App Service

  • Reduced the deployment time of ASP .NET applications in the company.
  • Gave us an alternative to quickly deploy our applications without granting access to the version control system to a third platform.

  • Thanks to 1&1, I have saved money on my domain costs with the free private registration and with a very reasonably priced SSL certificate. I save at least $100 a year using 1&1
