In my opinion, I would say it is more suitable to huge workloads, where you really needs the reliability and performance that a Netapp storage provides to you, larger share sizes, etc. Use cases where you really needs to store large amounts of non-structured data.It is not a cheap solution, I mean, you can find other options to store your data on the Cloud at smaller prices. So, for small companies, or companies that depends mostly on web-applications, or don't have such a specific requirements, I would not go with Azure Netapp Files.

IBM Cloud Virtual Private Cloud (VPC)

We used it to deploy a version of our data science environment, particularly in tight integrations. Some software needs both administrative and technical support to handle it, and with the VPC sitting outside our company's infrastructure, we could readily build without burden. This allowed us to grab ROI faster and within the deadlines required by the business areas.

Pros

Azure NetApp Files

  • We have found that it scales very well. In some cases we had a large existing storage infrastructure and were able to migrate it while other times we started from scratch with low storage demands and Azure NetApp Files fit the bill each time.
  • We have been impressed with the replication capabailities.
  • The read and write speed when interacting with files is a major asset.

  • The IBM Cloud Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) architecture allows scripted preparation and management of the virtual environment, which we use to link the IBM VPC API with an Ultimus CPS solution, allowing our colleagues to manage the IBM environment directly from our own management solution.
  • IBM Cloud Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) uses a "pay what you use" pricing model. By integrating the IBM Cloud Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) API into Ultimus management processes, the machines can be started and stopped automatically specifically for the needed times. This saves us a lot of money.
  • The performance of the IBM VPM machines is excellent and gives us great performance for developing and presenting our Ultimus products and solutions.

  • It does not support file locking although its available as an add-on
  • Design is far from native and has a learning curve
  • We would like to have backup functionality built in so that we don't run into the issue where the replication process makes a copy of the corrupted data.

  • The documentation and integration between OpenShift and IBMCloud was not clear. It took some time to figure out which interface to use to setup certain items.
  • Better communication between departments could be improved. Had a billing question and had two departments saying it was the other team's issue. Took three days of back and forth to resolve.
  • The documentation for loading containers into IBM Cloud OpenShift container registry was not clear. The correct commands were not documented.

Great responsiveness and detailed know-how from the team. Self Explanatory and good resources on the Web to resolve issues. Good communication on issues via email. Good response times on issues which arise and where we have received support from the IBM support team. We believe that IBM is a great Partner to base our IT applications and we believe that a critical infrastructure like a cloud backend will be well served if we continue to base it on IBM.

It's fairly easy to use once you use it a couple of times, but I wouldn't like to rely on IBM Cloud Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) completely because I don't want to be locked into a particular cloud provider. In terms of support, the docs are pretty good, but sometimes you wish that information was easier to access like with other providers.

Azure NetApp Files is very well integrated with Microsoft Azure, we use the same request methods that everyone knows from Azure. NetApp and Microsoft has built a very efficient solution that allows you to transfer virtually any service to the Microsoft public cloud. Azure NetApp Files also protects our data very well.

We chose IBM Cloud [Virtual Private Cloud (VPC)] because of its tight integration with the Lithops library, which allows us to quickly scale our compute resources by provisioning VPC instances or calling Cloud Functions, handling all the deployment, data moving, etc. without us needing to know the details or learn another language, all from Python code.

  • Positive impact includes getting high performance when working with huge volumes of data along with low latency.
  • Did not encounter any negative impact as such except that it is comparatively costly than similar other services, but then it is tradeoff price vs performance.
