Bamboo

If you value integration over cost, Bamboo is clearly the way to go. It offers tight integration to the rest of the Atlassian suite, and when you need traceability from issue to build, Atlassian is the right way to go. However, if you find yourself needing to save on costs, you may consider taking an approach of rolling your own build system with open source alternatives, such as Jenkins, if you don't [mind] putting in a little extra elbow grease.

Continua CI

Mostly it is very suitable for any product based company who wants to add a CI system for their products. This tool is perfectly suitable for a company which releases builds very frequently. By using this tool they can reduce a tremendous amount of manual effort. If company's budget is not high and if they can not afford the premium plan then this tool won't be suitable for them because the basic version of this tool won't provide much functionality

Pros

Bamboo

  • Levels of granularity. Organization has many projects that have many build plans that have many jobs that have many tasks, etc. And branch builds allow source control branches to be built separately.
  • Versatility. I can use bamboo to manage my Java, node, or .NET build plans. I can use it to spin up Windows or Linux build agents, or install it on a Mac to build there as well.
  • Bamboo integrates with other Atlassian products like Bitbucket, Stash, JIRA, etc. If a company commits to the entire Atlassian stack then work can be tracked through the whole development lifecycle which is really useful.

Continua CI

  • First thing is this tool is scalable which is the biggest advantage of this tool. It won't take much time in setup and making it ready. It has a very good user interface.
  • This tool has almost every source code repository support like Git, SVN, Microsoft Foundation Server etc. Moreover, it has very good support for various build tools like Visual Studio, MSBuild etc., which makes it even batter.
  • We can trigger multiple builds at a time with the Premier subscription.
  • It allows users to apply many deep levels of configurations which make the whole system even easier.

Cons

Bamboo

  • Extremely hard barrier to entry for non-backend developers
  • Blackbox makes it hard to customize functionality
  • The inability to add features without breaking core functionality
  • No cloud solution
  • Tasks cannot be put in if/else statements
  • No clear right way to form build plans

Continua CI

  • Mostly I don't have much more recommendation for improvement because this tool provides almost everything which would be required in any continuous integration system. But still I would suggest improvement in the reporting system. The build report is a field where they can make improvement by adding more information if they want.

Usability

Bamboo was fairly easy to navigate but in the end it always felt as if it was developed as a bolt-on and not a true group up user interface. There were multiple ways to get to everything and the path was never the same. So it was difficult for users to really get a feel of how to use the application.

Atlassian support is also great for all its offerings including Bamboo. However, we feel that Bamboo does not get as much love as some of their more popular offerings such as Jira and Confluence, and it sometimes takes a bit longer for issues and feature requests to get addressed in comparison.

Alternatives Considered

Bamboo

Bamboo's ability to integrate with Bitbucket and Jira (the other two key systems we use) pretty much sealed the deal on our decision to choose Bamboo over other alternatives. Being able to map every build result back to the relevant code changes and Jira issues are just too valuable for us.

Continua CI

In my previous company I have used Jenkins for maintaining their CI system. Even this tool is also very good. The good thing about this tool is it’s an open source project. So in terms of pricing, we can consider this tool as an alternative to continua CI. One has to compare both of the products before going to use any one because both have their own benefits and drawbacks.

Return on Investment

Bamboo

  • It helped us achieve the Continuous Deployment and Continuous Integration goals for our applications, a huge milestone that saved a lot of time for developers in making the builds and deployments and saved time for QA in running the automated tests.
  • Helped with DevOps: we moved the formal approval from the email to the system and allowed the approver to actually push the button for the production deployments.
  • Biggest positive impact of using Bamboo is that it improved our response time to customers and increased the frequency of our deliveries to them.

Continua CI

  • Basically, this tool will reduce manual effort of creating, deploying and testing software products. So ultimately it will reduce manpower which would otherwise be required for such things.
  • It is time saving and improves the overall performance of the entire team and system.
