Bamboo

If you value integration over cost, Bamboo is clearly the way to go. It offers tight integration to the rest of the Atlassian suite, and when you need traceability from issue to build, Atlassian is the right way to go. However, if you find yourself needing to save on costs, you may consider taking an approach of rolling your own build system with open source alternatives, such as Jenkins, if you don't [mind] putting in a little extra elbow grease.

Consul

Consul looks to me like an amazing solution to store configuration data. In huge cloud environments like what we are using nowadays, it is quite important to have a reliable source of parameters to our distributed applications, easily scalable and also, easy to change parameters spreading them efficiently over our entire environment.

Pros

Bamboo

  • Levels of granularity. Organization has many projects that have many build plans that have many jobs that have many tasks, etc. And branch builds allow source control branches to be built separately.
  • Versatility. I can use bamboo to manage my Java, node, or .NET build plans. I can use it to spin up Windows or Linux build agents, or install it on a Mac to build there as well.
  • Bamboo integrates with other Atlassian products like Bitbucket, Stash, JIRA, etc. If a company commits to the entire Atlassian stack then work can be tracked through the whole development lifecycle which is really useful.

Consul

  • Service Health: Using Consul for service health/discovery has been critical to our success in a hybrid environment
  • K/V Store: The Consul K/V store is the best solution out there for our particular use case, which is as a locking mechanism to coordinate otherwise random runs of our configuration management system. This has allowed us to have peace of mind of system availability in our on-prem infrastructure.
  • API: The Consul API as a whole is excellent and extremely easy to work with
  • Documentation: Hashicorp really does documentation well. Their examples are easy to follow and everything is written in a manner that is easy to understand for beginners with the tool.

Cons

Bamboo

  • Extremely hard barrier to entry for non-backend developers
  • Blackbox makes it hard to customize functionality
  • The inability to add features without breaking core functionality
  • No cloud solution
  • Tasks cannot be put in if/else statements
  • No clear right way to form build plans

Consul

  • We would like to see more out of the box training for Consul use.
  • Best practice examples would be nice for routing.
  • The agent could be easier to run.

Usability

Bamboo

Bamboo was fairly easy to navigate but in the end it always felt as if it was developed as a bolt-on and not a true group up user interface. There were multiple ways to get to everything and the path was never the same. So it was difficult for users to really get a feel of how to use the application.

Consul's API is extremely user friendly. While their web interface isn't quite as "mature", it's still pretty easily navigated for the average person. Together they make a pretty easy to pick up and use tool.

Atlassian support is also great for all its offerings including Bamboo. However, we feel that Bamboo does not get as much love as some of their more popular offerings such as Jira and Confluence, and it sometimes takes a bit longer for issues and feature requests to get addressed in comparison.

I've never used paid support from HashiCorp, but I consider its support a good one, since they provide a lot of free resources for the community and there are good user groups supporting you on several sorts of issues. Also, HashiCorp is known as a company with a strong relationship with the community, that is easily noticed by the events HashiCorp promotes over the world.

Alternatives Considered

Bamboo

Bamboo's ability to integrate with Bitbucket and Jira (the other two key systems we use) pretty much sealed the deal on our decision to choose Bamboo over other alternatives. Being able to map every build result back to the relevant code changes and Jira issues are just too valuable for us.

Consul

We studied Zoekeeper, trying to decide which could become our service broker tool of choice. But although it is meant to be a very high performance tool, it got immensely shadowed by the vast plethora of available tools that Consul offers. The monitoring, health checking tools, as well as the key-value data storage and gossip clustering functionalities just could not be beaten

Return on Investment

Bamboo

  • It helped us achieve the Continuous Deployment and Continuous Integration goals for our applications, a huge milestone that saved a lot of time for developers in making the builds and deployments and saved time for QA in running the automated tests.
  • Helped with DevOps: we moved the formal approval from the email to the system and allowed the approver to actually push the button for the production deployments.
  • Biggest positive impact of using Bamboo is that it improved our response time to customers and increased the frequency of our deliveries to them.

Consul

  • Consul has paid for itself just in monitoring and keeping us notified alone.
  • Configuration changes can be monitored and will make even your Security team smile.
  • The time saving tools will help make even a lean IT team work like a larger force.
