Easy to use and reliable, with very little maintenance required and zero downtime to date. For the education sector, ease of use is hugely important as IT Managers/Technicians are often "Jack of all trades" with a good, broad general knowledge but perhaps lacking specific expertise in certain aspects. Being provided with easy-to-follow tutorials and instructions has been very useful in setting up and configuring the firewall, especially as my background is more in desktop support.

Compliance to audits and HiTrust certification. It is key in ensuring that our audits are completed in a timely manner with no repeats of data requests and that we also are HiTrust certified at our organization. Personally while the data obfuscation is available I am not sure I would fully trust that the data is completely sanitized if need be. It's not against the Imperva product but more of issue of data being used.

  • Navigation of the menus can get confusing pretty quickly. Since there are so many, it is extremely easy to get lost. Almost too many options and data.
  • Configuring the agents can be very difficult if you are new to it. Having to save after every single change made to an agent during a configuration can be very tedious. Also having to make sure certain options are checked off in two separate places for a single option is very annoying.
  • Navigation of the menus is not always intuitive and not very obvious that the option you are looking change is located in that menu.

The Barracuda Web Application Firewall is easy to use. Support from Barracuda is great also. Load Balancing of the Web Application Firewall is also nice. This allows you to do maintenance or have large loads for the end-user. Threat monitoring of our network and traffic coming into our services within our cloud solution.

Alternatives Considered
Barracuda Networks, Inc.
We have used SonicWalls and WatchGuard firewall appliances neither are even remotely close to the Barracuda Web Application Firewall. In addition, Barracuda support is fantastic. Throw in the 4 year (free) refresh cycle and there is no reason we would even consider the other two again (at least for the foreseeable future).

Return on Investment
Barracuda Networks, Inc.
  • Negative impact: a default port was open and missed by one of our techs.
  • Positive impact: it protects us everyday now that we have it locked down.

  • Allowed us to meet important compliance requirements.
  • When protecting critical data, we can see exactly how it's being used and by whom.
  • Licensing costs are very reasonable.
  • It takes a fair amount of administration to use properly.
