Basecamp

Basecamp is great for the organization of design or copy comps and sharing progression of the project. It is not meant to be only a file share site, but integrates well with box, dropbox, and Google Drive for larger files. It allows for client sharing, so that only certain messages and files are seen by your clients, but requires a bit of training within your team to function properly.

Webex (formerly Webex Teams)

As an attendee at Cisco Live events, the Teams application was fantastic for the breakout sessions so that people who were in the session could join the Teams space for that session, get the presentation from it, ask questions in real time and better still carry on the conversation after the event had finished. So I would say that one-to-many discussions and document sharing is great.One-to-one chats are OK, but the volume of these can become overwhelming and as a tool that is intended to help remove e-mail traffic, your Webex interface can end up looking like a messy e-mail inbox very soon.

Pros

Basecamp

  • Ease of use meaning that non-technical users can be onboarded with minimal training required
  • Range of features meaning that you can use Basecamp as your core project management platform and don't need to rely on other tools in conjunction
  • Good collaborative features to encourage adoption and management of end-to-end process on Basecamp

Webex (formerly Webex Teams)

  • The secure end-to-end encrypted communication give us the trust we need to share company information on meetings and teamwork.
  • I think Cisco Webex meetings and instant messaging is a easy to use and very intuitive interface to use it right away. We spend little time to teach others how to use it and take advantage of the features.
  • We also like the collaboration experience, were we can share files and documents on a portal and have advanced search capabilities that it is easy to find company documents.

Cons

Basecamp

  • I use Basecamp V2 because the newer V3 misses some functionality of V2. It seems it was built for a slightly different purpose. Unfortunately, V2 is not seeing feature updates as often as V3
  • Integration with other platforms would be nice. For example, I'd love to see my personal calendar or my business Outlook calendar overlaid on the Basecamp calendar, but this is not a possibility currently.
  • I can subscribe to Basecamp's iCal to show the Basecamp calendar on my personal calendar, which is handy, but it is quite limited. I can't see any detail about the task aside from the title. None of the description or information on what project or task list the task is attached to.

Webex (formerly Webex Teams)

  • When it's time to join a Webex call, users are prompted via Outlook to open the call through their browser, but also get a prompt from Cisco Webex Teams that they can join the meeting in the tool there. This seems unnecessary and can often be confusing - users should have the ability to pre-determine which option will be their default choice.
  • There aren't many ways to customise the view of Webex Teams Spaces, this would be a nice feature to have.

When I bring new people onto a project, it's immediately obvious how to use Basecamp. I don't have to worry about teaching them the features or walking them through it, it's just incredibly user-friendly. For this reason, I'll continue to renew my subscription even as new people are brought onto production jobs or the client changes.

Now, we can't see any other option but Cisco Webex Teams and Cisco's collaboration products to keep our communications up to date and with enough tools and features to confront any posible situation, being a normal work year or a year like this 2020, wich has make us all prove ourselves what we're able to do in manners we haven't even think of before.

Basecamp is a little tricky to learn. I've used it for quite a while but I feel like there's still so much I don't know. It took me a while to learn but having used it in college definitely helped me integrate it into my work career.

I've never experienced downtime while using Basecamp, or been unable to access it when I needed it. That's not to say they've never had downtime, but I've been lucky enough not to encounter any, and I work odd hours, including late nights when maintenance is often undertaken.

For the many reasons I've given, Basecamp is a very strong program. There are a few features I can imagine that might make it even better, but I don't have a basis for comparison to be able to say that there is definitely a better one out there. I've noticed that Basecamp has evolved a bit from the time I started using it until now, so that makes me think that the producer of this program values it and believes in continuous improvement. If you could use the features offered by Basecamp, I would think you could use it with confidence.

There is a good level of support via Cisco for this product. There are available knowledge bases and articles that help with the setup, operation, and features of Webex. Since there are sufficient enterprise users, many of the questions are typically already addressed either in support cases or with information on the web.

Decide the process before implementation - i.e. when it's due 8/9 does that mean 8am, noon, 5pm, 11:59pm? Check your to-do list frequentlySet-up templates - just not with the dates (they can be funky)

Alternatives Considered

Basecamp

I have used Jira in past roles with different organizations, and I find Basecamp to be much more user-friendly and better at the more complex conversations that need to be had around product features. Basecamp knows what it does well, and sticks to that, instead of trying to be a more all-around product development tool like Jira. In my experience, Jira's interface was much more confusing, and contained a lot of functionality that my team didn't use.

Webex [(formerly Webex Teams)] with our Broadworks integration beats the others hands down due to the ability to out the box on our platform have an enterprise grade collaboration product along with external calling capabilities that other products cannot offer without further expense.

Return on Investment

Basecamp

  • We have far less meetings! Which is great. I think this has made us far more efficient, wasting time with meetings and getting more done.
  • We are able to keep track of notes and progress on a project much more easily. I feel like things stay on track much better than before we had Basecamp.
  • I think timelines and deadlines are kept very clear and everyone has clear expectations. This means people know exactly what they need to work on at any given time (and know what they will be working on next too). As bad as it sounds to say, I think before we had Basecamp, deadlines and timelines weren't very clear sometimes.

Webex (formerly Webex Teams)

  • Dedicated support was added to answer Webex and other video conferencing tickets.
  • Remote classes became more feasible without requiring students to meet at specific locations. This has increased enrollment in hybrid and distance type classes.
  • Personnel now have a common conference software to hold meetings on that they have become familiar with. Individual departments are becoming less fractured.
