Oracle Berkeley DB

Berkely Database is particularly adept in its ability to scale, partition, and segment data sequences in a clear and efficient manner. It also requires little manual administration, and is capable of scaling 256 TB of data into a single file. This has been very helpful for us.

Couchbase

One scenario where Couchbase would be a perfect solution is a migration from RDBMS to NoSQL database due to scalability or performance related issues. On the other hand, Couchbase might not be the best choice for smaller projects using a particular vendor services only, in that case e.g. DynamoDB seems more suitable.

Pros

Oracle Berkeley DB

  • Supports multiple concurrent processes manipulating databases as large as 256 TB.
  • There are existing API bindings for the most common languages on the market i.e. C++, C#, Java, Perl, PHP, Python.
  • Provides a high-performance data storage.

Couchbase

  • Easy to store unstructured data and has great performance
  • Managing security is super easy which can be managed across different levels
  • UI is pretty simple to use and manage the cluster
  • Backup of the data is very easy and the restoration/recovery is fairly easy as well with the in-built tools.
  • Easy integration with elasticsearch for replication
  • It is fairly easy to scale up or scale down the cluster

Cons

Oracle Berkeley DB

  • Implementation was difficult
  • Customer service not always best
Nathan Richardson | TrustRadius Reviewer

Couchbase

  • Community edition has various limitations, like [the] inability to view/edit documents over a certain threshold or inability to use various types of [optimized] indexes.
  • The indexes performance degrades when a certain number of mutations is reached.
  • The views creation can be quite slow and impacts the deployment speed for large buckets.

I rarely actually use Couchbase Server, I just stay up-to-date with the features that it provides. However, when the need arises for a NoSQL datastore, then I will strongly consider it as an option

Couchbase has been quite a usable for our implementation. We had similar experience with our previous "trial" implementation, however it was short lived.
Couchbase has so far exceeded expectation. Our implementation team is more confident than ever before.
When we are Live for more than 6 months, I'm hoping to enhance this rating.

Performance for key-value is great. Indexing can be slow on large dataset, index rebuilds also can take long, especially in recovery situations. Although relational use case is fully supported and performance is good, architects and developers need to better refactor the applications and data model. Blind move from relational to Couchbase is not always smooth.

I haven't had many opportunities to request support, I will look forward to better the rating. We have technical development and integration team who reach out directly to TAM at Couchbase.

Alternatives Considered

Oracle Berkeley DB

In our opinion Oracle Berkeley DB is the most mature solution outperforming other vendors in several aspects. Its high and solid stable performance has huge significance to us and to our customers. Wide spread community of Berkeley DB users is a valuable source of information. Also high quality support provided by Oracle makes solving any emerging issues super fast and easy.

Couchbase

Single console for managing multi-cluster and multi-cloud deployment options and [the] ability to secure and isolate database information in a secure environment to prevent undefined access is great. Analyzing and delivering information and fast access and processing data securely with different access levels was much more important than before. So we used Couchbase Cloud to overcome this challenge, both for ourselves and for our client projects.

So far, the way that we mange and upgrade our clusters has be very smooth. It works like a dream when we use it in concert with AWS and their EC2 machines. Having access to powerful instances along side the Couchbase interface is amazing and allows us to do rebalances or maintenance without a worry

Return on Investment

Oracle Berkeley DB

  • Made us more scalable
  • Gave us cleaner data
Nathan Richardson | TrustRadius Reviewer

Couchbase

  • N1QL's SQL-like syntax has made bringing new developers up to speed both easy and inexpensive.
  • The schema-less approach to data store has increased agility.
  • Operating at scale, Couchbase tends to be less expensive than major RDBMS solutions, especially once you implement high availability in RDBMS.
