If you are looking for "Instant BI", Birst isn't that tool. If you want to roll your own solution using a single application to perform all of your ETL, reporting/dashboard, like to get deep in the weeds and have a lot of control of how your data is processed, this is going to make you smile.

SAP BusinessObjects Business Intelligence (BI) Platform

SAP Business Objects is well suited to organizations who have financial analysts who would like to write their own financial reports, without constantly having to employ specialized report writers with IT degrees. Through the use of Universes, "regular" folk can write operational and financial reports using English terms, and not SQL code. This revolutionized the reporting that we do, when we implemented it years ago. I don't use the graphing and scorecarding features of the product, but I see the results of those that do in our organization. It's quite impressive!

Pros

  • Easy to create visualizations
  • Very attractive visualizations
  • Connect to many data sources
Robin Filan profile photo
  • Easily allows end-users to build their own customized data queries and reports.
  • Reports can be exported to excel or pdf with one click in order to be shared with other stakeholders.
  • Once built, reports can also be scheduled to run at specific intervals (daily, weekly, etc) and automatically e-mailed to stakeholders, saving time.

Cons

  • The user interface for the administration and development could use a face-lift. Although I believe this is happening very soon.
  • As a small implementation we've had some issues finding a suitable outside partner for consultation.
Andy Olson profile photo
  • Implementations are too time-consuming and costly.
  • The components in the Business Objects suite (Lumira, Explorer, WEBI, Analysis, Dashboards/Xcelsius, etc.) all serve different purposes. There is no common look and feel and they all require different skill sets. This leads to challenging training and user adoption and limited BI self-service.
  • The security model behind this and most SAP tools is very cumbersome and difficult to implement and manage.
  • Customization requires skill sets that are not readily available in most organizations. Other competing platforms leverage Java, C#, JavaScript, HTML-5, .NET, etc.

This is not really applicable, as I am no longer with the company that selected and implemented Business Objects. However, if I were still there, I think there would be a reasonably high chance of renewal. Once the initial investments have been made in procuring, implementing, training, etc., it would be somewhat prohibitive NOT to renew

From a server and client side perspective. the Business Intelligence Platform provides a foundation for all aspects of content development, distribution, analysis, collaboration and self service. Ease of use from targeted content delivery through controlled accessibility. Content exporting in the format of the users choice. Scheduling for internal or external delivery. Public and private folders for secure content access when requied. Web based for viewing on the users device of choice without the need to download additional applications.

Performance

Birst struggles with complex data sets coming from SSAS, that resolve very quickly on tools like PowerBI
Tim Welch profile photo

When it is deployed properly the system is very stable and consistent in its response times. The way the product is designed the data sources it connects to and the bandwidth of the network its on can be the main performance inhibitors. Addressing these two factors can greatly increase performance overall. Integration with third party tools requires strict adherence to SAP specifications. When they are followed there is no performance degradation.

Support

Birst5.3

When we have an issue that is stopping our business from proceeding, I want answers sooner than later. While Birst does have a published response time for each case level, we always wish it could be quicker. What response improvement could there be with a larger support team?In response to first question: Blackhole of issues - Birst needs to improve upon closing issues that resolution was dependent upon code fixes or enhancements, perhaps someone to add a comment on all case tickets at least every 60 days.Escalation - I always have the ability to electronically or via phone escalate a ticket. I also have my Customer Success Manager through whom I can escalate topics.

Very difficult website to use that is not very intuitive. It's hard to reach a good support person that can actually help with the issue. We usually end up solving the issue ourselves.

In-Person Training

I went to their annual user conference (Birst Forward) and their standard training class (Birst Boot Camp) this year, and both were excellent. Very educational, and I got all of the personal attention I needed to get my questions about my specific answered. I've also reached out to the trainers after those events to ask more questions, and they've been great about getting back to me with answers

Implementation

Birst5.3
Based on 6 answers
Our initial implementation was rocky. Without writing a novel, there were a few main issues. The professional services company was decent, but not great. We also did not have adequate resources on our end to provide the services company what they needed (an expert on our database, etc.). As the project manager, I definitely tried to do too much with the initial implementation and was very guilty of "chasing squirrels", as I've heard it called. All of this lead to us running out of professional services hours we had paid for, without a working product. After that unsuccessful first attempt, Birst sat on the shelf for a bit before we got our new (and current) CSM. He called us to see how things were going. After learning that the product wasn't in use and how poorly our first go at it went, he bent over backwards to get us up and running, first with spreadsheets, and then with our database, all at no additional charge to us. Combine this with the training I've received, and we've got a working product up and running without the use of a professional services company. We are definitely one of their smaller clients, and I was surprised at how much work they put into turning the project around for us

Choosing the right personnel to deploy and maintain the system is critical to success. Do not underestimate the value of a sandbox and or Development environment. Every aspect of the initial deployment and subsequent upgrade and enhancements should be thoroughly tested by the developers and administrators for expected functionality and compatibility with all interfaces. A Test environment is just as crucial. Initial key user content testing and formal performance testing should take place here prior to the production deployment. This is also where you finalize your operational support plans and system/user security

Alternatives Considered

A platform to speed up development and also to provide self-service analytics to our customers.
Stephane F. Tremblay profile photo
ThoughtSpot is superior for query speed and simplicity but is inferior in merged-dimension query setup and execution. BOBJ is superior to Tableau in that the universes simplify the queries for the end-user, however, it's inferior in visualizations. decisionpoint is a dashboard tool with potential but is still new. However, decisionpoint is superior in building dashboards on limited technical resources and varying database platforms.

Scalability

Birst6.0

we can see that loading a lot of data can cause a noticable slow down in performance. Birst support indicated that they don't really consider anything less than 30 seconds to be an issue, but that is not the case for our customers, so we have had to change some of implementation to address this

Return on Investment

  • Price keeps going up - always a concern.
  • More tools on the market similar to Birst
  • We've seen a marked increase in sales as a result of the ad hoc modeling function. Our salespeople love it.
Jean Jennings profile photo
  • By generating and distributing reports in a timely manner, we were able to save millions of dollars for the company which otherwise would not have been visible.
  • Almost realtime dashboard, saved the company a huge amount by showing the outages and kept the company from buying a tool to do just that.
  • It showed the customers who were not paying the bills and were missing in the system due to some loophole. This was visible by doing reporting on the theft usage of electricity.
